Delta Floats proposal for huge Jet Order
Delta Air Lines Inc.,the world’s second-largest carrier, plans to order 100 to 200 narrow-body jets and seeks options for 200 more as it replaces older planes.
A request for proposals went to planemakers last month, and deliveries may begin as soon as 2013, Atlanta-based Delta told employees today on an internal website. Delta said the request went to “several” manufacturers it didn’t identify. Airbus SAS and Boeing Co. are the biggest commercial-jet makers

Let the speculation begin!
Anyone think DL may add some A321s to their lineup to replace some of the 752s? Some 318s to replace the DC9s? Some 320s to replace the, well, 320s?
What about the Boeing side?

There are many, many variables to this question. In general, the plane with a larger capacity between the two comparable aircraft will burn less fuel per passenger (in this case, the 737s).

318s simply won't happen. PMDL was a Boeing fleet, PMNW had quite a large fleet of Airbus (besides DC9s, 747s and 757s) so I am guessing that DL will lean toward Boeing since they already have a number of 737s, 747s, 757s, 767s, and 777s. DL has stated they want AVOD pretty much mainline fleetwide yet haven't installed it on 319s or 320s which I think may indicate that they are going to be replacing these airplanes with some new planes in that 2013 timeframe with AVOD. The 737s seem newer and I couldn't see them replacing them anytime soon, however some of the 320s are getting older

Many of the Airbuses and 737s are of the same age as well...quite a few NW A319s/A320s got delivered between 1998-2003 (including all A319s); the vast majority of Delta's 737s (the original 71 of the 737-800s) were built during 1998-2002. Delta has 12 737s that were built between 2008-2010 (10 -700s, 2 -800s), but not a huge difference maker. Either way, both the 737s and the vast majority of the Airbus fleet has a good 10-15 years left of flying in them minimally; I'd say this order is more to look at replacing the DC-9-50 (built in the 1970s; now over 30 years old); MD-80 fleet (delivered 1987-1993, so 17-23 years old currently), as well as potentially filling in some of the gap that occurred when the DC-9-30/40s left in the 100 seat range (to fill the void between the 76-seat CRJ-900/EMB-175 and the 125-ish seat A319/DC-9-50/737-700).

I fly MSP-ATL-GYE tomorrow and the ATL-GYE is on a 738 which just bites because even though it's an overnight flight, IFE should be a must on a 5.5 hour international flight. Quito gets the 73W and has IFE so why wouldn't Guayaquil. Again disappointed in Delta. Seat will be terrible (even though it's in Business...eh domestic first lol) so I can't sleep and no IFE or Internet. I guess I just have to look forward to getting into GYE at 5:30 and heading to my bed at the Hilton....

I'm sure the Brazilians and Canadians are in the mix for this too ... the Bombardier CSeries looks like it should be comfortable.

I think its would workout very well for DL and they'll will eventually to ordering newest A321NEO is more suitable. I think it will perfect time for replacement the entire 757-200 aircraft. A321-200NEO is more capabilities and more fuel efficient. If they will have enough more range to flying over transcons flight. Can A321 will possible to flying to Hawaii with the ETOPS overwater restrictions.
