Mileage Math

I am travelling SLC-ATL-JNB this weekend with a return along the same route. I am booked in F and J on all 4 segments, with seats 7D and 7A on the 77L thanks to the good advice on Flyertalk.
I was just status matched on Delta to GM. I have never been GM on Delta and am trying to calculate the MQM for this trip, and the math I used is this:
Estimated Miles= 20046
Class of Service Bonus: 20046 * 1.5= 30069
Medallion Mileage Bonus: 20046 * 2= 40092
Total MQM for trip: 70161
Will someone confirm the calculation or point out the error of my ways?

Unless I am wrong on this, it will be like this:
MQM = 30069
RDM = 60138

Welcome to Flyertalk, bigswiss! ^

Ah, everyone would be Diamond if it were that easy.

What you call 'Medallion Mileage Bonus' is really a SkyMiles bonus. You do not get Medallion miles for this, only redeemable miles. That means you will have 40,092 SkyMiles after this trip, which can be used for award travel and other purchases.

Thanks for the quick replies. It seemed too good to be true.

SLC-ATL-JNB shows as 20,058 miles round trip according to MileCalc. For the base trip, you earn 20,058 MQMs and 20,058 RDMs.
For the Class of Service Bonus, you earn 50% extra MQMs and RDMs, or another 10,029 MQMs and 10,029 RDMs.
For the Gold Medallion bonus, you earn an extra 100% RDMs (no extra MQMs), or another 20,058 RDMs.

RDM: 20,058 + 10,029 + 20,058 = 50,145 RDM
MQM: 20,058 + 10,029 = 30,087 MQM

So I was off as well! So, the medallion bonus is not multiplied by the total derived after the class bonus?

den1k Nov 11, 2010 3:12 pm

Actually you will get:

20046 Base miles
10023 Class of servive bonus
20046 GM Bonus

501115 Total miles/ 30069 MQMs

javabytes Nov 11, 2010 3:25 pm

The bonuses are calculated separately from each other.

The Class of Service bonus is both RDMs and MQMs, and is 50% of the base flight miles.

The Gold Medallion bonus is RDMs only, and is 100% of the base flight miles.

I will report back with the miles that I am credited for the trip. Nevertheless, I am happy with 50K for one trip ^

Here is an example.

Since you are a Medallion that earns 100% elite bonus (like me) and flying on paid premium fares (like me), you can use my shortcut to the answer: multiply the base mileage by 2.5 to arrive at the total number of RDMs you will earn, and multiply the base mileage by 1.5 to arrive at the total number of MQMs you will earn.

That is either a typo or a 10x bonus miles promotion you've managed to keep secret from the rest of us. :D

The others here are correct. This tool works brilliantly to calculate both SM level bonus and class of service bonus:

I just ran it for you anyway:

Total miles actually flown: 20058
Total MQM: 30088
Total redeemable miles: 50146
Status now: gold

Yes, this is the right number. My totals were off by one because of rounding, but this is what you will receive.

You don't have to report back. What you read here is gospel on matters like this. However, don't let that stop you from coming back. You will learn tons.

Understood. I will be back often to continue learning.
