2010 New INTL Route Speculation Thread

We are finally in the time of year when DL usually makes their big international route expansion announcement:

10/20/09 http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/delta...ight=expansion

11/12/08 http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/delta...al-routes.html

09/25/07 http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/delta...next-week.html

Confirmed so far / pending approval (missing any?):
LAX/DTW-HND
JFK-KEF
ATL-DKR-LAD
HNL-NGO
NRT-ROR
MIA/BOS-LHR
DTW-GRU
NGO-SPN

Rumors:
JFK-NAP
ATL-PVG
DTW-PEK
NRT-CAN

Personally, I see the focus being on Asia/Africa as has been the case the last year or 2. In Asia, perhaps you'll see them "connecting dots" between their 2 US Asian hubs, SEA/DTW:

Current:
DTW - NRT/HND/ICN/HKG/PVG/NGO(-MNL)
SEA - NRT/KIX/PEK

Potential New Routes:
DTW - PEK(772)
SEA - NGO(763)/PVG(763) (drop NRT-NGO)

There are plenty of available China frequencies right now, so perhaps now is the time to snap them up?

As far as Africa is concerned, perhaps some connecting dots and perhaps some new service?

Current:
JFK-DKR/ACC
ATL-LOS/DKR(-LAD)/ACC(-ROB/ABV)/JNB
(NBO/SSG if approvals are ever granted)

Potential New Routes:
JFK-LOS(763)/CMN(752)/ALG(752)/TUN(763)
ATL-DKR-CPT(330)
ATL-ACC-ABJ(763)

I know CPT failed last time, and I don't know that things are much different now, but with the launch of LAD it would make sense to have another flight operate via DKR. As it is now, the crews will have 4-5 days off in DKR on each trip. Another option would be to change ROB/ABV to operate via DKR.

What are your thoughts on these and other new potential routes to be announced in the coming weeks?

ATL-BOM has been rumored to be returning by a handful of FA's.

NGO-SPN is being launched in Feb. 3x Weekly first, then daily with 757-200.

Agree. Probably just a knee-jerk response to FI adding 2x daily JFK-KEF flights.

I hope not... I hope it's JFK-BOM/DEL.

Perhaps they see Icelandair operating flights from Delta hubs (JFK and MSP) and two focus cities where DL has relatively strong interests, SEA and BOS, and think they should give it a try.

Being SLC based, I am hoping for

SLC to AMS (maybe 40% chance in the next 5 years)

SLC to LHR (maybe 10% chance in the next 5 years)

SLC to MOSCOW (Maybe .000001% chance in the next 55.5 years)

We can always hope that Delta returns to CPT, but I am skeptical. Given that Delta pulled out with the World Cup coming up, which would have guaranteed several consecutive weeks of heavy loads on that flight, I just don't think the numbers were there for it.

If service to CPT were to return, I personally think the natural way to do it would be with a tag on a new JNB flight about three days a week. In other words, keep the daily JNB frequency, and add three more flights a week to JNB, with continuing service to CPT. I think JNB could use the extra seats on many peak days and this would be a way to offer CPT to help fill the seats on those extra flights.

But, as I say, I doubt any service to CPT happens.

Rather have JFK-BOM than ATL-BOM atleast avoid the challenges with weather cancellations getting ton ATL.

I've heard rumblings of this as a summer seasonal service, although probably not next year. I know that last summer, SLC-CDG had the highest load factor of any of DL's US-Europe flights - that sounded a bit promising.

I don't think I see CPT service happening. Long flight into a leisure market, even with a DKR stop.

I've heard a few possibilities of filling in a few holes out of NRT such as KUL and CGK. Don't know how much substance there is behind it though.

ATL-IST is constantly talked about thought of and has become a possibility ahead of TK launching their IST-IAD-ATL flight.

with what aircraft? it would have to be with a 777. All of the 777's are currently used on routes that also require them.

My guesses

LAX-
LAX-KIX 763
LAX-NGO 763

SEA-
SEA-PVG 332
SEA-NGO 763
SEA-HKG 777

DTW-
Daily ICN/HKG/PVG
PEK 777

ATL-
BOM 777
DEL 777
PVG 777
IST 763
TXL-763

JFK-
MUC-763
DUS-752
OSL-752
LIS-752
BOM-777
DEL-777

Now I don't expect ALL of these to be added(though over the next say 5 years I do) but I would say my list covers pretty much anything that could happen this year.
