My daughter just did a RT ATL-JNB which was booked relatively close to flight date in M class... heavy loads due to the World Cup. She was in coach both ways... I haven't had a chance to debrief her about the coach service, but she returns back to MA tomorrow night from Denver. I will be sure to post anything that I learn.
She actually made Silver on this one flight alone! I have been a PM for 11 years straight, and I have not flown anything close to this stage length ever. ATL-GIG is as far as I have flown, and the JNB flight is almost 4000 miles longer! |

SWU upgrades come from a completely different bucket than the seats released to an NRSA. SWU upgrades are processed and allocated based on revenue managements willingness to release seats whereas NRSA dont get on to the plane unless those seats arent occupied.
The ATL-JNB run has been extremely full since the World Cup started and I would expect that you havent seen many people scoring the upgrades via SWU during that period because a majority of J seats have been sold. From RealDLInsider post: "The new systemwide upgrades will still require the purchase of a YBM fare, however will become usable on the day of departure and will also become fully automated (no more paper). In essence, should a Diamond or Platinum Medallion purchase a YBM fare internationally and there are empty seats in Business Class on the day of departure, we will now upgrade them using these certificates." |
