Splitting PNR

My husband, 3-year old son, and in-laws are flying to Florida on Friday. My husband is on one PNR, as he has an open-jaw itinerary that includes a business trip the following week. My son & I are on another PNR. The in-laws are on a third PNR.

My husband and I are both gold medallion. Our son currently has no status, nor do the in-laws. The in-laws, the kiddo, and I are all on L/U/T fares. My husband's is Y.

I called Delta today to have my PNR separated. My goal was to have our son's itinerary added to the in-laws itinerary and for my husband & I to increase our chances to sit in F. Regardless of what happens, the MIL will definately end up sitting with the kiddo. Our motivation for wanting to sit in F is all about leg room: my husband is 6-6 and I'm 6-0 (and 6 months pregnant), so the more leg room we have, the better.

I was told they are unable to do this, due to my son's age. I asked about having his PNR added to the in-laws; I was initially told they wouldn't be able to do so. I was later told that it would have been possible, but there aren't any seats available next to the in-laws and the 3-year old can't sit by himself.

Any ideas for separating the PNRs?

Is it possible to upgrade the boy's fare from an L/U/T to a K or higher and then he can be upgraded? (If this happens, the kiddo and the MIL will sit in coach together and the FIL would sit in F with my DH and me).

Other thoughts? Am I SOL?

I've been told many times that you can not join PNR's together. And once they are split that they are split.

YMMV

Unless your son has status he is not eligible to upgrade. So buying a new ticket in K will not help. I would work to try and get seats together for the inlaws and your son. Check out http://www.benedelman.org/travel/dlseats/ every day and look for seats together. Also, I believe you can find an agent that would assign preferred seats to your son and in-laws since you are on the same flgiht (some have reports less willingness for agents to do this) if you see preferred seats together

You can't combine PNRs

Thanks!

Thanks for your responses. I appreciate your input.

I was thinking that if I was able to get him a K or higher ticket, he would be eligible for a companion upgrade AND/OR a buy-at-the-gate upgrade (if available).

Thanks again.
