The DL M class requirement goes back more than 10 years... as did the NW Y/B (sometimes M) requirement for mileage upgrades. I don't expect a change in philosophy. Parties seeking Business cabin rides on fares (U.S. origin) less than $2000 need to find a new airline as the OP has done.

While NW had the B fare requirement, B fares were readily available sub-$2k.
You're right though, DL is not competitive. All the other domestic legacy carriers offer upgrade instruments that are good on all or nearly all of their fares.

Says it all - I will shut down my move to LH and *A - I already have been comped SEN and have flown almost 100k over there, but I will stop and move my business back to DL...
IF they fix the M fare class/SWU fiasco - meaning that as a DM I will recieve 4 SWU's that can be used at fares of 1700 or less.... or have an M fare in that range....

M fares for under $1700?
Looks like you will be staying with LH.
I like LH.

LH is a fine a/l, so the OP really has very little downside. I think what is frustrating is that DL has a pretty decent FFer program when it comes to domestic travel but one that is non-competitive internationally. I can't understand why DL is so pig-headed about limiting SWUs far more that its competitors and/or keeping the upgradable fares at levels far greater than the competition unless rev mgmt has some models that the other legacies don't have and aren't smart enough to figure out. Whether by design or not, it is putting DL at a competitive disadvantage and leaving a sour taste with many in their FFer program, especially those in the higher tiers whose transaction costs to leave for another program is very small.

Oh, I believe that indeed is the case, I was just inserting a bit of sarcasm. Here's another attempt: I don't don't think DL rev mgmt has ever been wrong about anything.

Not sure about TATL but TPAC was as low as 1300ish (nrt). I miss those days!

DL hasn't had a TPAC M fare in the 1300 range for more than 5 years to my memory.

OP, you must not have studied the LH SEN program rules well. Here's how LH upgrades work:
As a Senator, you get a wonderful helping of TWO one-way upgrade vouchers for short-haul flights. You can combine them for a whopping ONE one-way international long-haul upgrade. Yes, it can be redeemed on cheaper fares, but you basically get ONE (yes, ONE) ONE-WAY (not even roundtrip) upgrade across the Pond....
Want to use miles to redeem an upgrade? Try 50,000 miles ONE-WAY for a Europe-USA upgrade from discount Y to Business. Yes, that's twice the Delta mileage for a one-way transatlantic upgrade.
Cheap, easy, and frequent long-haul upgrades? Miles N' More is not the answer....
