Cute dog, sad story if true.

If one does not like dogs, and if it is true, good for DL.

It's better than losing only part of the dog.

Shame on DL for only offering a credit in the amount of the pet transportation charges. That is absurd. I like the comment, that I thought of when reading his story, to ask DL to return the empty pet carrier if indeed the dog "escaped."

He will end up getting a lot more cash than $200 when this is over (my prediction).

Happens often it seams.

http://www.thirdamendment.com/animals.html

If we take the key stat as dead+lost (assuming the lost are not later found) then we have over the last 5 years:

CO/UL 54 dead / 7 lost
DL/NW 21 dead / 14 lost
AMR 29 dead / 7 lost

Southwest is perfect as they do not allow checked pets.

Most of the smaller airlines look worse on a rpm (revenue pet mile) basis.

If you look at individual case reports (same link) you can see Delta does report some to the FAA as "the kennel did not arrive" "theft a possibility". Try back in a few months and you should find that particular report.

If you live near one of the cities they serve, try petairways.com They only fly animals in the plane, not in baggage, and there is an attendant for them throughout the flight and lounges on both ends for pre and post boarding use. Costs about what you would pay to fly the pet in the cargo hold of a major carrier, but pets travel in more comfort and much more securely.

From the URL: US 1 death, 1 injury, 1 lost

So US must make exceptions sometimes.
