LAX SkyClub renovations?

I read in a few posts that the LAX Sky Club is getting renovated. Does anyone know what to expect after they're done?

itsaboutthejourney Feb 24, 10 6:45 pm

More fake cheese?

Seriously, I'm guessing they will cover the rotunda to add more seating. I'm also guessing they will remove the bar and make drinks self-serve.

Personally, I'd like to see:

- Modern decor (like LHR T4 SkyTeam lounge)
- More variations in seating (some stools at the window, some couches, a large communal table, WorldClub style seats with the swivel trays)
- A dedicated elevator or escalator for the club (no more sharing with the trash haulers and crews skeptical of what floor you are going to)
- Power outlets EVERYWHERE
- Expanded views of the tarmac (like AA and AS lounges)
- An area free of blaring TV's
- AS and WC style self-serve refrigerators with veggies and real cheese
- A basket of apples, oranges & bananas somewhere

IIRC the rotunda which is cool but takes up space is gone. There is an area free of TVs, it is actually usually empty, the space behind the check-in desk (to the left of the bathrooms). The cubicles back usually have nobody. Elevators are difficult to add to an existing building, lots of structural issues involved so I don't know if that will happen.

The one thing I do like about the LAX club is the variety of drinks served. One of the few, maybe only, club that serves the DL cocktails and also a variety of beers on tap and in bottles. If the club went self service, I think all of that would be gone.

I forgot to add that nobody goes back there because cell service is weak back there. Hopefully opening the desk area (maybe making it face the entry?) would allow folks to go right or left (to that unused space)?

i never been in there, quick question, can you see the run way from the SK.

You get a view of the planes and gates of T5 & T4.

When will that happen? I was there two days ago and didn't see any signs of renovation. I would agree on the rotunda space, I really like it, but the lounge space is too small.

Honestly...I'm all for removing the full-service bar because every time I've been there I've had to wait for some woman to come walking from the back. And when I've attempted to engage in dialogue, the level of English has appeared minimal. To me it just degrades the whole experience.

For one- although I enjoy beverages, I for the life of me don't know how to mix them apparently, so I do appreciate having someone there to mix them... was in ORD 2 weeks ago and tried making a couple drinks- one came out horribly strong, (easy fix, added more OJ) the other one curdled the baileys :eew:. And as others mentioned, it would probably keep a wider variety of drink options. Hope to try this once AS moves into T-6 as we're limited to 3 beverages per club... (and some of your freebies are call drinks @ AS)

But it can be kinda slow like in SEA, when there isn't usually someone behind the bar and you need to find an agent...

Oh, and can I add a request for showers too ;) (There's a couple transpac's from LAX)

Not only that, but they were complaining about a customer in spanish, and didn't realize that I spoke spanish and understood the whole conversation.

:o

Better not take them away then :p

Dang... all the more reason to find entry while in LAX...

Finally checked dulta.com and saw:

*Club will be undergoing renovations beginning February 15, 2010. Please pardon our progress as we make way for a new and improved experience
haha- it also has the putput green ;) (had a little fun with this in DCA :o)

Anyone have an update on the renovation? Is the club still open? I'm flying out of Terminal 5 this week

Just left there so yes. I ate all the Biscoffs so don't get your hopes up for those. They did have a HUGE bowl of olives too...Yum.;)

Long time lurker, first time poster

I'm here at the club right now, they're definitely full swing with construction as most of the old rotunda has been blocked off and 20% of the old open seating area (by the windows) is behind temporary construction walls (that have no sockets, sigh...). The place is definitely more crowded because of things. They've closed the room that had the printer. The cubes are still there, but they're now even more hot and unpleasant than before. The regular bathrooms are open.

I asked the folks at reception when this is supposed to end, and they said --hopefully-- by May. We'll see about that.

Hope this was useful for folks passing this way.

Recent LAX Sky Club Experience?

Is there a place to make a quick change of clothes in the Sky Club? Don't relish the notion of flying 5+ hours in coach in business suit. Would love to travel casual and then be able to change into my suit before I head to visit a client.

I know the LAX Club is undergoing renovations so anyone who has been there recently that can advise the current status of the facility please share your thoughts about my plans.

Thanks.

Oh did they finally add the olives? LAX was one of the few that I hadn't been able to get them. Perhaps it had more to do with time of day I am there. I had a very nice time in there at 5:15 am (surprised they were open) and ate a bagel, yogurt, orange juice (which I had to dilute) and a shot of espresso. Any other airport that woud've been $20 worth of food. I felt it was too early in the AM to ask for a Bloody Mary so I got one at SLC 2 hours later. Helps me stay asleep.

As for the Sky Club itself, I am not sure if they will go under 2 stages of renovation or just simply build out over the rotunda and maybe expand the bar so it reaches further into the new construction. BUT I could see them moving the checkin to the opposite side of where it is now and make that whole area where you checkin and the hallway to the bathroom/showers (showers don't work BTW at this moment) a seating area instead. I would move the TV over there, like SLC has the TV room separate from all the other rooms, they could accomplish that IF they do 2 stages of reconstruction.

I am thankfully on 3 weeks of rest and relaxation so I won't be back through there until early June but I will see if I can find someone who knows or can draw a sketch or maybe it will be closer to finished by then. I've got so much travel booked I got a feeling this year I am going to be very very close to making Diamond.

IIRC the men's restroom has one big handicapped toilet stall that is big enough to fit any luggage you may have with you and change your clothes without getting too close to the toilet. Not the best circumstance, but doable nonetheless.

The showers are closed for renovations....

For those who regularly use the LAX SC: Any update on this, as I will be transiting LAX to/from SYD and the showers would alleviate the need for a dayroom at a hotel?

Thanks!

They were closed last night and it's a madhouse in there. The bar is now gone and about another 1/4 of the space as well. The bar is in the area about 10 feet from where it used to be. No refrigerators, just ice. It's VERY VERY crowded at night.

The shower facilities are not open during construction... :(

Word is, construction should be done by the end of July, but only take this with a grain of salt... Also, they just put up the renderings of what the SC will look like after construction is done and looks really spacious :D

Sorry... :D

I was there Friday night 10pm. Was less crowded than over the last few months and the rotunda now has a bunch of tables and chairs, so there is more room. The bar is a temp setup, but still serving. Overall, it is getting better day by day, even though construction continues. Had a wide variety of snacks, even saw nutella for the first time.

...at least the bar didn't pull a HNL :p

I was advised today that re-opening of the newly remodeled DL LAX SkyClub is currently planned for July 15, 2010.

I loved what they did in ORD! Yes the bar is gone and we have to make our own drinks, but I don't miss them + I love the extra room.

If that is what is in the works for LAX, I think it will be great.

I can't remember whether there will be an official bar.... But there is a huge rendering poster at the entrance of the LAX SC, so maybe someone can snag a quick picture of the poster and share on FT....

I'll look for the pict I snapped on my iPhone, but the rendering didn't make it clear there was a bar, I recall SC's are moving to the self-serve concept as refurbs are made, so I expect this one to be the first test for them of that.

Hmm... didn't realize there was one there before (my first visit)

Perhaps a 'cheat sheet' would be nice to show how to mix to make the drinks taste drinkable :o

Heard from one of the staff that renovations are to be finished by July 11. I think they might be a bit past this but it starting to look really nice.

Mill Creek Don Jun 30, 10 8:48 pm

Was through LAX SC yesterday. Staff said that the showers wouldn't be ready for "at least a month" and just shrugged when asked for a completion date for the main club area.

Back through there again Thursday evening and next Wednesday. Will post updates if anything appears to be different in regards timeline.

It would be cool if you could snap a picture of the rendering poster near the entrance and share it on FT... The rendering shows the new bar and ceiling high windows. I would do it, but my next booked DL trip is not until labor weekend :(

Now you can see the blue table in the far left end of the rendering... The bar counter there looks "open", but still looks like a bar counter... Perhaps, they will alternate between having an employee stationed there and self-serve?

EZE Jul 2, 10 10:05 pm

Looking good with lots of additional seating.

My concern: lack of electrical outlets. There appear to be very large sections of several walls that have no plugs.
