Focus Cities??
 

This last weekend my brother in law was scheduled to fly RDU-DTW-GRR, but his first leg was cancelled and he was rebooked RDU-IND-DTW-GRR. I had not realized that IND was a "focus" city for Delta. Was curious as to what other cities were focus cities or had point to point (not through a hub) flights?

I would say LAX and BOS off the top of my head, since they both do have quite a lot of feed into them and have international connections available.

And, most would agree, CVG :(

It's pretty much down to IND, BOS, LGA, DCA and LAX now. About two years ago, you could have added CMH and MCO and make an argument for BDL (for PMDL), as well as MKE (off and on) for PM NW).

I may even argue RDU in some extent. I was flying DFW-ATL-BOS, and the ATL-BOS cancelled. So the agent couldn't find anything via DTW/MSP/CVG/NYC, so he started getting creative and found seats with a routing of DFW-ATL-RDU-BOS. Didn't realize how big the operation was in RDU. Beautiful terminal as well.

IND isn't nearly what it used to be. It was a much larger focus city at one time.

from what i've been looking at recently, i would agree with RDU

We seem to be missing HNL here as a clear focus city, with 6 x daily 747/A330 (of these: 4 int'l, 2 domestic) flights out of it, and a lot more on 757's and 767's, and lots of connection opportunities, esp. for Japan - US.
On DL:
HNL - NRT, KIX (Int'l)
HNL - LAX, SFO, PDX, SEA, SLC, MSP, DTW, ATL (domestic)
direct flights, most routes twice daily.

Recently released 2009 stats for IND shows that DL handled approx. 1.5 million pax in and out of IND for the year. That is a focus city.

you forget the newest domestic HNL non-stop: SAN!!

Yes Delta just added LAX and HNL from SAN, is San Diego a focus city? Not really, but I could see people flying ATL-HNL via SAN

IND was NW's largest non-hub operation....they decided to help ATA with their bankruptcy strategies...within days of ATA announcing a new hub in IND NW decided to make it a LARGE focus city....weeks later ATA decided to make MDW their hub instead....while NW did cut some flights right after ATA's annoucement they have continued to add flights up until the merger....not sure how IND stacks up against the DL focus cities though...but the legacy NW focus cities were MKE (was the largest until IND was ramped up) and GRR...SEA has always been a large international focus gateway
