Can I do this type of UG?
 

Hi,

Traveling with 5 people on the same reservation. I'm the only SM member. My outbound is a T-Fare and return is K-Fare.

On the outbound can I request an upgrade only for me, and the return for me and one of my fellow travelers even though all 5 of us are in the same itinerary?

Assuming that you are on the same fare classes in both directions, here is what you would have to do:
1. Separate the PNR. There is really no reason to keep them together.
2. You can list for the upgrade on the T flight. You can't list a companion unless they are on a K or higher fare.
3. Then, after your T flight out, but before your return, you can list your companion (as long as comp is K or higher) for the upgrade. Since the PNRs are separate, the comp will not pull you down in the upgrade lottery.

The only down side of separating the five of you on the PNR is that if, for some reason you were irrop, the system wouldn't know to try to keep you together on auto-rebooking. But that's a risk worth taking, I think, to possibly upgrade a buddy.

What's the routing? Your friends here could probably tell you the likelihood of getting all the way to a Comp UG on the route if you give us cities and times of day.

The outbound is :830pm flight from JFK to LAS on a thursday night(2/18)-booked in T
The return is: 1130pm flight from LAS to JFK on sunday night (2/21)-booked in K.

Also does it matter if the whole trip was booked on delta vacations with a hotel? Will it be harder to separate the PNR in this case?

It was booked with delta vacations so the outbound is in T-Fare and the return is K-Fare for all of us.

Just a friendly reminder, if your SM status is not listed in your profile (mine isn't either), you need to tell us what that is in your original post so we have all of the information. Sometimes I forget to say.

I'd call SMS and ask them to separate them. I think they should be able to do it, but I can't say for certain since I've never booked with Delta Vacations. It shouldn't be a problem.

Isn't there another downside to this plan? If the OP separates him/herself from the original PNR, then the remaining pax no longer enjoy the benefit of having the same baggage allowance as the OP and are now subject baggage fees, in both directions.

I don't think anyone will be checking in bags. But thats why if I can get help from my fellow FTers what are the chances of SM upgrade on the 2 flight times I mentioned on that days i mentioned.

Its more then that; if you separate the PNR then they will also no longer have access to premium seating, including exit rows.

Not a big deal.

If my fellow FT brethern deem it unlikely a lowly silver medallion like me will be unable to secure an upgrade in the outbound and an upgrade with companion on the return then I will leave the reservation as is.
Till then, if my fellow brethern may let me know what my chances are for my flights 830pm flight jfk-las on a thrus night, and the 1115pm las-jfk flight on sunday night

I don't have any personal experience JFK<->LAS, but I suspect that both segments (especially the red-eye back Sunday night) would be tough for a Silver.
