How about let's be fair and list the whole set of statistics:

5/9 for on-time arrivals.

4/9 for canceled flights.

8/9 for luggage.

9/9 for complaints

4/9 for bumped pax

Some would consider the first statistic to be the most important.

Well, we should give Delta credit for buying NW - Otherwise, they wouldn't have any of their hub airports ranked in the top 8. Now they have two - DTW & MSP.

How come SLC and CVG are not in the list, given the traffic is NOT that busy there?

Really? So on time is more important than having your luggage with you?

Delta was no better than mediocre in all other categories. That's my FAIR opinion.

Are those are higher the better?

Statistically, you are far more likely to be impacted by delayed flights and resulting misconnects and stranding scenarios that you are a mishandled bag. Further, as someone who travels for biz and ALWAYS carries on and never checks a bag, I could give a hoot how many bags the airline mishandles. I do care about delays that cause me to miss meetings and upend my schedule.

As for DL being mediocre...is there ANY domestic airline out there that is anything other than mediocre? At least when I have a travel issue with DL I can get it resolved (via SMS) as opposed to when I travel with WN and am left in the lurch with the masses. Again...it's all about perspective and priorities. And that is my fair assessment.

Does anyone know whether this data includes the commuter carriers for each legacy airline?

If not, the data are not a fair representation of what the consumer faces when he buys a ticket from DL, AA, CO, etc.

As someone who travels overseas for biz and pleasure, I certainly care about my luggage to be there when I arrive. I would say all these catagories in the ranking are about equally important.

IMHO, CO and JetBlue is above average among US airlines.

Again...it's all a matter of priorities and perspective. There is no one right answer here. We all make choices based on what matter most. It's intersting that you say CO is above average, yet their on-time perfromance would suggest otherwise.

So, these are the on-time statistics:

Rank Airline On-time
1 Hawaiian 93.3%
2 United 92.6%
3 Southwest 92.0%
4 Pinnacle 91.3%
5 Northwest 91.1%
6 SkyWest 90.8%
7 JetBlue Airways 89.1%
8 Alaska 88.3%
9 American 87.8%
10 US Airways 87.8%
11 ExpressJet 87.7%
12 Mesa 87.6%
13 Delta 87.4%
14 American Eagle 87.2%
15 Frontier 87.0%
16 Continental 86.2%
17 Comair 85.1%
18 AirTran 80.6%
19 Atlantic Southeast 80.5%

What's imteresting is that most airlines are clustered around the mean and, quite honestly, a couple of 1/10 of a percent difference are not really statistically significant. For example, the different between DL and US is 4 more delayed flights per 1,000 flights at DL. Again, likely not statisitcally significant.

That said...ASA is a hot steamy mess, is always a hot steamy mess and will likely be a hot steamy mess for a long time to come (there variation IS statistically significant.

Curious thing I was thinking about was how much weather impacted these statistics?

If the commuter carriers are not included, it would be even worse for DL.
