Interesting. Currently have award ticket on NW, originally booked via DL, NW flight. I am Silver on semi-international (MEM to Jamaica). First is wide open. In fact, very few premium or coach choice seats taken either direction - nobody has taken any exit or bulkhead row seats yet.
Upgrade possible?
Last time I flew this (3 years ago), they offered FC seats for a small sale price which we grabbed at advance checkin.

I've been upgraded on NW metal award tickets twice since the FF integration on 10/1 - both were MSP-EWR, one was a two days in advance, the other was at the gate.
Neither time did I ever ask for an upgrade - in the first case, I went to check my seat assignment and found my 5A was suddenly 4A; the other was at the gate - I was running late, looked at the Cleared List, and it said MER/J (F) - was very surprised to see that, as I expected to be in coach on that flight.

Are you sure about that being applicable in practice for NW elites? I've seen new DL Platinums not being added to the upgrade waitlist when on award tickets and even being told -- incorrectly -- by DL agents that award tickets were never eligible for upgrade.
