To each their own; I find it useful to use my time productively in the SC rather than hanging out at the gate.

OP, I'm going to be about 6,000 EQMs short and I'm going for it at as well. All the reasons stated so far are good ones and Im happy with the DL product enough to build to status from scratch this year and then maintain it next year.

Seams like nobody has mentioned the biggest advantage of being even a measly FO (silver), preferred seats.

I would call that a $300 - $400 value right there.

On trips I can plan in advance I have always been aisle/exit of my choice. And on last minute flights I still get a decent seat.

Excepting regional jets of course.

Does preferred seating selection have anything to do with award availability? IE if a flight is near-full and only preferred's are left, the flight won't show up as available?

Some of the offers for gold also had a MQM offer.
Call Amex and ask them if they have any offers for the Gold card.
The first year is often free and you get 5000 MQMs with some of the offers.

In case you do not want to spend 150$; you can change the card to a fee free card after 3 months. You may only spend 50$ for the MQMs
