The Definitive "Do you tip at the Sky Club?" Master Thread

I realize that tipping practices vary from country to country, but when traveling in the U.S., do you tip the server at the bar in full-service Sky Clubs?

I'm only a 21 year old student, and I only ever ask for a Coke, so I've never tipped. I never usually have change in USD as I'm usually only in the US for transit.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3G: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7C144 Safari/528.16)

So long as I have cash I do. The problem is I rarely have cash.

Isn't there a huge thread on this in the old DL forum.

Short ansewere...depends. Cokes, water etc no. Beer , wine $1 every two drink, mixed drinks I would probably do $1 each drink (but I can't recall the last time I had one much less two or more )

I tip if I get a real drink at the bar but rarely for a coke although sometimes the guilt factor gets to me. Its hard to tip for a free coke although if I'm gettting multiples I'll leave a buck.

This issue is the one area I really get irked about with the Bartender vs. the NW self-pour situation. Ideally I'd like the alcohol at a bar but let me get my own soft stuff.

I'll tip if it's a friendly, motivated bartender. Given that those have been few and far between, I haven't tipped all that much.

Never, nor should it be expected, someone said something about motivated staff, something I have rarely seen.

Absolutely not, DL absorbed the NW clubs, which had pour your own which is superior to a bartender in every way... I'm certainly not going to pay in addition to the downgrade.

I tip, provided I have cash. $1 per drink. Same as any other bar.

I think I'd rather have a bartender than a 1,000 different hands that have come from all over the world on the bottles.

+1

I'd rather have someone serving me a drink than harassing me for my ID/BP/sniffing my shoes/limiting my liquids.

At one of the JFK clubs, there's actually a sign that gently suggests that tipping is appropriate. I can't remember the exact language.

I will also say that I recently ran into the "world's worst bartender" at that location. More recently, though, another bartender was more adequate.

You also can't really get any mixed drinks at the JFK club -- not sure if that's the case elsewhere. I'm in the habit of tipping for mixed drinks in airline lounges and not so much for just pouring a glass of wine or beer. That said, I leave a buck (if I have one) in the jar the first time I get a beer, but don't usually bother tipping for a second round. Given the level of service I usually receive (these bartenders couldn't possibly get a bartending job in the "real world), that dollar actually feels excessive!
