Getting to Rome from Civitavecchia
I'm going from the port at Civitavecchia to Rome and need to find out the best way to get there. My cruise ship only offers an expensive option to get there. I would like an easy, relatively inexpensive option for two people.
Thanks! |

has nice instructions on taking the train from the ship to Rome. Romelle |
The train is the easiest.....

ticket can be purchase from the 'news stand' too. Be sure to get the "B.R.I.G" type of ticket (It was 9EU), which allow you to use the local transit as well.
Take the slower train, which will stop at the Vantican, on stop before the Termianal. Check the return schedule back to port, the track is at the far end to the Terminal, which take close to 10 min walk. |
Get taxi from the harbour to the train station and get the train from there to Rome, the rail return ticket is 9 euro on slow local trains, you might also get the BRIG as suggested.
Otherways once in rome you can get a day pass for underground and buses for 5 euros. M |
We were there last summer and there was this little train that just ran from the docks into Rome, it was walking distance from the ship. You'd have to try and google it, as I don't remember the name.

Check the website to know more. It used to be sold only on board for packaged excursions. It is an alternative anyway. |
This is the best way, see train schedules below.
From Roma Termini to Civitavecchia Take the regional train 2 class 4,50 Euro p.p. (no reservations) Every few minutes a train leaves, average travel time 1.15h See updated train schedules http://www.ftroute.com/IT_ROM_CIV.cfm From Civitavecchia to Roma Termini Take the regional train 2 class 4,50 Euro p.p. Caution needed to prevent theft on train
Nobody's mentioned the very real need for caution on the train from Civitavecchia to Rome, especially if you're dealing with luggage, but even if you're not. Pickpockets consider this route a golden one, because of all the cruise ship passengers who are not used to travel in Europe. Do take the train, but do a little research to prepare yourself in advance. Know the potential risks.
Rome train station Theft Thwarter Tips To start with, do not let anyone help you onto the train, or help you with your bags. I hate to say this, but it's one of the top ruses to rid you of your belongings. Note: I am not fear-mongering here. Just trying to raise your antennas. Know the risks and you won't have any problems. I promise! |
Recommendation to Ciampino
We're arriving on the Seabourn Legend at approximately 0700 and have a 1220 flight out of Ciampino.
Our luggage will be manageable, thus taking a train is not a problem. But, I seem to have read, if we do take a train there are numerous connections and only bus service to CIA. Or should we just hire a car service? Thanks. -Jim |

We are also cruising from the same port, and I was told that the train is a good option only if you are not trying to catch a flight immediately afterwards, and only if you pack really light. We are doing the train, but that's because we are staying in the city overnight before flying out in the morning. In your situation, though, I would do the car option.

Validate Train Tix!
Just a note:
If you take the train from Rome to Civit, just remember to VALIDATE your tickets in the little yellow box BEFORE boarding. You will see them, they are everywhere. Just stick your ticket in, and remove it. That goes for all train tix, actually. |
You can check over on the Cruise Critic Seabourn BB. There is a lot of information about Rome and Civitavecchia over there.
Romecabs.com seems to be very popular. On the Roll Calls you might find other cruisers who will want to share a van. |
Check out Tom Ogg's guide to getting from the ship to rome at europeportreviews.com he even has pictures of each road junction you need to pass to get to the stations.
