European cruise questions

Thinking of taking a relatively last-minute Carnival cruise in Europe that starts in the U.K. and stops in four or five countries.

1. Do people who go ashore need to clear immigration at each stop?

2. Is it completely free to go ashore on one's own or does Carnival tack on fees?

Thanks.

generally no mid cruise immigration on European cruises

There is no charge from the cruiseline to go ashore on your own. However, rarely but sometimes ports (typically working ports) require a shuttle from the pier to exit the dock area that might have a small charge. This should be noted though in the daily planner so it wouldn't be a surprise. And it's really not that common for it to happen.

Last year, some ports restricted people to ship-sponsored excursions because of COVID, but I don't think there are any ports like that left at the moment.

Agree--that is almost entirely gone now. But remember, if things get bad again, those restrictions may return quickly. Always prepare to be flexible!
