3) the ship leaves from Hamburg and then stops in Southampton to board more passengers. Is one able to disembark and walk around a bit in Southampton and, if so, is that even worth doing?

I really enjoy Southampton. It is extremly walkable from port, has a few nice parks, a few nice stores, a nice little downtown. The Titanic Musuem was good.

I wouldn't characterize Hamburg to New York as a short booze cruise. It's 9 nights. I don't think they sell the leg from Hamburg to Southampton itself.

... part of your cruise is going from Hamburg to Southampton. That's the booze cruise. Not your entire journey. All those people will be getting off in Southampton. Cunard sells that itinerary separately for the booze cruises.

Hmmm ... both can't be right. So, which one is?

They have short cruises from Hamburg to Southampton or Hamburg to Bruges, which both are short booze cruises.

Any voyage leaving "Germany" is a booze cruise. Simple as that. It can be combined with other voyages but they will stop in-between and become the booze cruise.

A slight tangent from recent posts, but still on-topic. We've booked a Southern Hemisphere transatlantic from Rio to Cape Town in early 2028. We actually start in Buenos Aires, but the TATL part starts in Brazil. Has anyone else crossed the Atlantic in the Southern Hemisphere?

Which cruise ship/company? Many of the cruises, including transatlantics leaving Brazil could be on the routy side. It could become a party ship, from what I've read over the years. Come back and let us know what your experience was.

It's the Silver Shadow.

Good to know, then you shouldn't experience a party ship.👍 The cheaper cruise companies attract them.

we have done a fair number of repositioning cruises MIA to the EU or reverse. We actually like sea days, and you will have a lot of them on that routing. Silversea would be a really good way to go, and the other passengers will party like they are 75 but want to be 50. Even the ones in wheelchairs. They also do pretty good sea day entertainment, and I am not talking dancing showgirls. Good lectures, cooking classes, etc. You never know about weather, but it should not be like the Drake most of the time. I do not like Elon, but starlink on the ships is a game changer. The worst part is sitting with the people older than you telling you how they got to 750+ cruise days on Silversea. There will likely be a lot of those on this cruise, if they are still alive by 2028. We prefer expeditions for now, and sail with SS to Antarctica for the 2nd time in December. We might have to look at your cruise as we are booking into 2027. Edit- looked at cruise, what a great Itinerary. And a very good price. Lots of the upper suites already waitlisted. This would be an incredibly easy way to get to Capetown, to jump off and safari, leave from JNB. No Jet lag. All laundry is done on ship or safari camps. mmmm sending to mrs. boerne.

Ooh, that sounds lovely! We have not, though we did cross the Atlantic from the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern, crossing the Equator along the way. We went from Rio to Lisbon, with a lot of stops along the Brazilian coast, then crossed Equator as we crossed the Atlantic. Interesting ports along the way (Azores, Canaries). Nothing like your voyage though!

We love sea days as well. We've done multiple transatlantics and have our second transpacific coming up (on Silver Moon).

Cunard has an American Express offer for $250 off $1000 on American Express cards. Expires 3/1/2026.

*It should work with travel agents too since their charges are posted directly from Cunard and not the actual travel agent.

Do you have any link to this?

Are you referring to the Cunard cruise offer? If so, there's no link. If you have a American Express credit card it will be listed under the 'Offers" section on that card.

oleum Nov 4, 2025 5:48 am

I do have AMEX however UK cards, but I'll go take a look, thanks.

Edit: I checked through the offers on My AMEX Gold and Platinum cards in the UK, nothing there :/
This isn't unusual. AMEX in UK is very different from USA.

That's too bad. I guess it's only for the USA Amex Credit cards.😔
