Hawaii to LA Possible?

I hate redeye flights, and would love to fly to HNL and then cruise back to LA. I've been unable to find any one-way cruises in this direction. So far just HNL to Vancouver or Anchorage. Anyone know of any cruise lines that head this direction?

ha is subject to us maritime rules, which require more pay, etc for cruises starting/ending there....the ship must visit a non us port on the voyage....

you could book from conus & jump ship & fly back, or maybe embark in ha for one that stops in mexico on the way back....call the lines & ask....

there was a company that did cruises w/i ha, but it folded after ~ 3 years due to the high fares needed to cover the extra cost...

ps....there are daylight flights hnl-lax, but maybe not dl...

Carnival and a few other lines do occasional sailings from Hawaii to Ensenada. probably as close as you're going to get.

Specifically, for a one way trip between two US ports, it must visit what's classified as a *distant* foreign port. Not sure if Kiribati would qualify or not, but it's probably the closest thing that would qualify for that type of route. In general, you're probably not going to find anyone offering this route, generally a lot of the hawaii sailings are RT out of the west coast.

Even if you could find it, direct without stopping at a distant foreign port it's about a 5 day trip, so that's a pretty significant time investment just to avoid a red-eye flight.

There are occasional repositioning cruises to LA. Holland America has some based in San Diego.

As the post a couple above says, there is this piece of legislation called the Passenger Vessel Services Act (commonly confused with another one called the Jones Act). The piece of that that affects most cruises is that a foreign-flagged (meaning almost all of them) cruise starting and returning to the same US port needs to stop at a foreign port.

A cruise that starts in one US port and ends in another US port has to stop at a distant foreign port, which is either Aruba, Bonaire, Curacoa, or anywhere outside of North America. Thus, you can't sail from Hawaii to mainland USA. You'll see one way cruises that go between Hawaii and Ensenada, or Hawaii and Vancouver, or round trip cruises from California to Hawaii that stop in Ensenada.

Would have to start in the South Pacific - they wouldn't be allowed to board the ship in Hawaii due to the PVSA.

Not about cruises, but there are daytime flights from HNL to LAX offered by United, Delta, American and Hawaiian Airlines.

cruise people usually prefer going TO Hawaii instead of leaving FROM Honolulu :))
But seriously, look for relocation cruises to Hawaii (they also offer an one way itinerary from Hawaii). I would recommend you this site http://www.repositioncruises.com/ for repositioning cruises dates of departure and suggestive prices (they don't sell the cruises though, so you'll need to book on a different site). Good luck!

By the way, Silversea is a pretty expensive cruising choice, even with its repositioning deals.

This thread is months old, but I'll post what I found using vacationstogo search (departing HNL, repositioning).

April 25 Celebrity Solstice to Ensenada
May 6 Royal Caribbean Radiance of the Seas to Vancouver

Both 11-night and currently priced $1299.

It's being reported on CruiseCritic that Princess will have a Hawaii to Vancouver 10 day scheduled, beginning in 2014. Details should be available on 1/22.
