A&K might have better service than silversea
curious if there are more luxury options, as most are not focused on luxury dont recall ever seeing private/charters, but they must exist

Silver Explorer (Prince Albert II) has had positive feedback in my office. I visited the ship and thought it was more than comfortable. Last winter The World Ship also did an Antarctica spin, but without the same level of natural engagement that Silverseas does.

Please continue to follow this thread in the FT Cruise Forum. Also, a search in the Antarctica Forum may yield results.

i went on a german 200 pax ship a while back....hull rated a next level below ice breaker.....was going to book thru smithsonian but ended up booking thru the line....great trip....

This is one of the ships we're considering for 2014: http://www.polarcruises.com/antarcti...elia-ii_49.htm

Nobody mentioned yet that FT has a dedicated Antarctica forum where OP might also get input on the subject since IIRC cruises to that continent are 99% of the discussion on that forum which is as rarely visited as the destination itself.

No real comment on the best...but you can read our write-up (search trip reports) of a 20 day cruise that included 3 days in Antarctica on Holland America. We started in Santiago Chile and ended in Rio. Lots of pictures too.
|
Also check CruiseCritic.com forums. Sounds exciting to me.

OMG -Only one lifetime. Crossing the Antarctic circle and settuing foot on land is a must though.

:o Mea culpa as I'd read only the move notice to Cruises forum, not the mention of the laternate forum.

I can only travel in April. Seems like there is no cruises at all in Antarctica at that time??

That because you only have a small window of opportunity to cruise Antarctica, usually December and January. Try Orion cruise lines. |

The naturalists aboard were so knowledgable, and we went on excursions daily....weather permitting! The experience was one I wouldn't trade for anything. Go, if you have the chance. |
found a few yachts, like hanse explorer
including individual booking - this one in feb 2012 includes diving  http://newhorizonexpeditions.com/exp...ife-Expedition |
Trip to Antarctica - I dream about it, since I was a child :) But I follow all the info and news about this amazing place. Recently I found a great web page about Antarctica and little creature krill :) Many photos, movies and Antarctica games :) Worth to visit: www.krillfacts.org

We were fortunate to go there twice. First time was on Quark Orlova and last year on Polar (ice-breaker).........it is an addicting place, truly the trip of a lifetime. Whichever vessel you take, have a wonderful time!!

As everyone should be aware after the disastrous Costa sinking this weekend, safety is the number one consideration in any cruise, particularly one to Antarctica. Choose your ship to the bottom of the world based on safety, not luxury. I wouldn't even consider a ship to that destination unless it were an icebreaker. My best friend has been hounding me for years to cruise to Antarctica, but she wants to go the "cheap" route. No way!

hull has nothing to do with luxury, but yes, you can compare hull types
speaking of which, is there a good reference on this? and OTOH while i dont know the world's itin, maybe not as interesting after all not sure how itins for largest ships even work? if anything sinkings reinforce my preference for smaller ships, and not large ships |
