Snorkeling At A Port

This is my first cruise. If I plan on getting off at one of the ports to go snorkeling. I will bring my own stuff. When I get off the ship do I just put my passport or cruise card in a zip lock bag and go swimming with it? I just wouldn’t want it to get wet. Do they have lockers or changing rooms?

Depending on where you're going you should leave your passport on the ship in the safe. As for the cruise card those are designed to get wet so no issue there. If you state where you're going someone may be able to recommend a good beach. Another option which I have done is bring a small bag with me and a thin wire bike lock with me. I'd put that lock through the zippers and secure it to a tree,bench...ect

Depends on where you are. In many cases there is no place worth snorkeling right at the port, you would have to get away from the industrial area. Where are you going, there may be some people who can help out.

I would bring the cruise card, a copy of your passport, and leave the passport in the cabin.

I also would not trust a ziplock bag and would get a waterproof holder for them.

Your best thing to do would be to find a beach near each port that offers good snorkeling and has a locker stand, etc. Even still I would not leave the passport in a locker.

I'm looking snorkeling at Castaway Cay.

Oh that makes a difference then. At the private islands you can usually enjoy snorkeling right off the ship and not have to go to the other side of the island to get away from an industrial commercial port.

There's no need to bring your passport off the ship at all there.

There are no lockers there, I believe unless you are renting a jetski and they hold your stuff for you.

Yep, no need for passport nor a locker. Just bring what little you do need. If you do snorkeling first thing you can return to the ship then grab anything you'd need to just get some sun. There isn't all that much to do on the island that you can't do better on a real island. Relax, get some sun, buy a few overpriced drinks billed to your room and snorkel.

If you do get off at another port of call besides a private island you have to take at last your drivers licence or some form of ID if not your passport.

FWIW I leave my passport safely locked up in my cabin and take my cruise card and a drivers licence and some cash and put it inside one of these little waterproof containers that neatly fits into a velcro pocket I have on my board shorts so won't float away while snorkeling.

Why do you bring your car keys with you when you go swimming on a cruise?

:D

the cruises that i have taken keep the passport & rarely have i seen it until debarking.....now, tho, you often need id to get thru port security.....i cant remember ever having to take the pp ashore, but i may have forgotten some of the 35 or so we've been on....
