Fly Cruises

Has anyone here ever tried a fly cruise before? I chanced across this deal that rci's having, which is a fly cruise promotion around fiji for $2k-ish only! Apparently you'll take a plane to somewhere in Fiji, then board the cruise from there, then continue cruising around Fiji. Sounds pretty cool! There're also other destinations like the South Pacific, New Zealand and Tasmania. What do you guys think?

I used to take fly cruises, but no more. I do not like to be at the mercy of the flights that the cruise line chooses. Many times (not always) you can book flight cheaper than the cruise lines. Price out the cruise without air and see how much it is. Then check to see if you can beat the air fare the cruise is charging.

I'm with Goldiemom. First off, I always fly in the day before to allow for the unexpected. Second, the airfares are seldom the lwoest. From my closest commercial airport, I can fly Allegiant to FLL for as little as $29 each way (okay, RT after taxes and fees is more like $150). No other airline will touch that and between FLL and MIA, there are lots of cruises to choose from.

OTOH, there probably aren't any LCC's flying from TYS to the remote exotic spots of the world. Just get all your info straight before you book and consider the risk of missing departure.

Is this any different from a regular cruise that provides air?
