We prefer 2-4 night coastals, but we've also taken a few 1-night cruises on Princess. They count towards status, so it's a good way to work your way up for very little money. The 1-nighters are nice if you live in one of the port cities or if you need to pick up some miles.

If you work it right, you can take one cruise line in one direction and another for the return, thus avoiding cabotage.

If you know what you're looking at, you can actually get some good deals. But you do have to do your homework.

Cabotage
 
Seattle to Vancouver cabotage by coastal train is not so bad.
