Also take into consideration that if the $9000-$10000 you are charging is college tuition, you might qualify for the Hope or Lifetime Learning Credit, or at the least the education tax deduction when filing in April 2009. There are limits and all depends on your tax liability, of course.

Those tax credits are ^. Nice tip! Saved me some nice money a few years back. And that was with a very light load at a in-state Comm. College.

Yes, TurboTax found that in my mom's taxes last year. I don't file though since I'm not required, nor do I have earned income. Would there be a benefit for me to file just so I can claim the credit?

One thing I didn't see others mention is the cost of interest. If you're earning points towards a ticket you may not use/get for 1 or more years, do calculate the interest (opportunity cost, APR cost) you're paying on what's essentially a loan.

OMG, all this discussion on "is it worth spending $270 to get 20k in AA miles". This is so simple it is stupid. Simply apply for AA Citi card and spend $250 ON ANYTHING, books perhaps. Then take the $20 you still saved and go have dinner. You now have $250 in books, 20k in AA miles and a full belly. cancel the card and move on...

I would do both and hoard a lot of miles.

Yeah, but don't you have to wait 3 months until you apply for another Citi AA card? I just got the card in late November.... :)

You can't apply for more than 3 cards during a 60 day period, and if you follow the instructions I posted on page 3 of the thread on the link below, you could easily do 12+ cards a year. You could keep the card, but I would not recommend thi card in your wallet. Use the SPG AMEX for your regular CC.
