GM card

I am thinking about getting a GM card. I understand that with the old card, you could accumulate credits of up to $500 a year for a total of 7 years/$3500. With the new card, you can accumulate credits faster but the redemption allowances may be lower. I can't find the specifics of the redemption allowances anywhere--can anybody provide these? I am thinking of getting a light truck with an extended cab.

Check out
http://www.gmcard.com/
If it doesn't have specifics, it will have a phone number to call and ask.

I have the old card--a little over a year ago I had maxed out the 7 year/$500 a year limit at $3500, coupled that with a $2500 rebate and college grad GMAC bonus ($500) and bought a new 2001 Cavalier for $6,500--half off!
At 5% rebate, it's better than the airline mile cards (perhaps on par with the Starwood Card) if you plan on purchasing a new vehicle.

I think the max on a Cavalier now is $1500--not sure what it is on the trucks, perhaps a bit more.

The GM classic card is still a great deal. Especially if you're leasing, since the accumulated credit comes off the top. So for example, if the total payments for your 3-yr lease will be $10,000, and you pay it in full up front, you might get $1500 off. Make your best deal, then use your GM card points to knock another $1500 (or whatever) off.

I've done this with two different leases already, and next year will do it yet again

I just used $4500.00 this weekend off a La Sabre. Won't use it any more since I don't want to be forced into a GM car again and the accumulations have indeed changed. I got this in five years time. The old card had more than a $500.00 per year limit several years ago and also many bonuses. I used to get double dollars at Marriotts and a few other partners. This weekend offered $3500.00 in factory rebates in addition to the $4500.00 that I used........Pretty sweet deal!

I still have the old GM card and come to think of it, my rebate dollars will start expiring this month because the last car I bought was in June 1997. It's for that reason (that I probably won't buy a new car for a while) that I switched to a miles/points card.

To find the permitted redemption level for a given vehicle, try:

http://www.gmcard.com/generic/a_indexsitemap.html

Click on "Redemption Allowances" and select your vehicle.
