I think they're cashless at most--if not all--domestic airports now too. At least the ticket counters at SAN are, anyway.

You would think that no-tell motel type places would still allow cash, and, in fact, that it would be crucial to their business model. I wouldn't know from experience.

There's a coffee places around the corner from my office that doesn't take cash. I always thought that cash was "legal tender for all debts" and you couldn't refuse to take it.

In any case, I just use Apple Pay there, which is super convenient.

There is generally no debt. An exception is restaurants where you eat first. But for most shopping there's no debt. So they can make it part of the terms of sale.

So you only have an argument for sit down restaurants and even then, I doubt that would be enforced. Especially if they warned you in advance.

For final settling of the bill, yes. For securing the reservation at check-in, not necessarily.

I have seen people pay with cash at chain hotels once in a while. But it's not necessarily their whole payment, and it's not likely their security deposit that's demanded when they check in.

Similarly, you may be able to do it for a rental car, but again only for final settling. You're not likely to be able to drive away with the car if all you present is cash for the reservation's stated rental cost. And for same reason, the rental company is not likely to accept the security deposit (even though they don't call it) with cash at pick-up time.

Computers won't allow it. Seriously doubt even a manager could overide that.

Is is becoming more common in the Chicago Loop. A few of the lunch spots (Goddess & Baker, Epic Burger and Sweetgreen) have gone no cash.
