Just did another booking using tirpla and this time it gives the option to book in USD pre-paid or pay in yen at the hotel. $385 USD vs 53,900 JPY (which today is worth $365 USD). So $20 extra -- 5% (!). I am booking way in advance (months) so I guess using it could protect me from a further decline in the dollar (which seems likely to me given current economic policies), but jeez...

Think of 5% as your forward premium

Been seeing a lot of this terminal in the Okanagan, BC. Easy enough to opt out, but I'd be curious to know how they're calculating 4.99% because the markup has been closer to 7.9-8% over the XE rate and what has posted at Chase.

Below was an Android smartphone/Google Pay contactless payment; at the same place another FTer paid with Apple Pay/MC and was not offered DCC (and was processed in CAD)

Definitely ran into DCC in London this last visit more than I have the prior two. Both the hotel and the restaurant our first night had touch screen terminals that offered DCC. In fact, the latter had me insert after tapping, and I am guessing that is a reason why.

I have informally noticed more instances of DCC in the UK during recent trips. There's never been a problem opting out, but there were a couple of unexpected cases of DCC.

This might be the first time I've seen DCC actively being advertised domestically. ATM at the new SAN T1 this morning:

Of course this was the one trip I decided to leave my Revolut card at home (and contactless didn't work, either). Maybe next time.

Yes -- we experienced this as well for a family member applying from Germany. Not DCC in the classic sense but definitely a scam (that the UK government quite probably isn't even profiting from).

There is no option to pay in GBP. The only way I could see to avoid the surcharge was to claim to be in the UK, which would be a problem, since it would mean you're there illegally.

This Worldpay scam continues. I reviewed the Home Office contract with Worldpay and it seems the UK Gov does not profit from DCC in this instance (it is offered, as usual, for convenience purposes). I know people are concerned that saying apply from UK would be dishonest, but it is there only for payment flow because the question is not asked earlier during the legitimate "visa" questions and submission process. Now that this ETA process applies to many countries including most of EU, lots of extra DCC money being made. Just keep putting on your survey to please offer payment in GBP to everyone. I heard it may be worse for Canadians where it makes them pay in USD, so a double-conversion. I would not be surprised if an official Home Office response will be, just select UK for that question if you want to pay in GBP home currency. This is what I did also.

And as well all know here, you still have to use a no FTF card because the DCC does not replace a FTF fee as almost all of the US issuers with a FTF fee (3% or whatever) apply it to any transaction done overseas, regardless of the currency of the charge. I agree the amount is small, but that is the game of how these companies make their profits.

Weird that they use the phrase DCC, like normal consumers would know what it means, vs "select your home currency!". Or maybe they think the phrase sounds cool and hi tech so people will click yes?

You didn't check in May? :)

I should be able to check next time I'm flying out of there (mid-May). :tu:

I'd be curious to see what the markup is if you get a chance.

Oops! I actually forgot about that :( Looks like I need to start bringing my Revolut card everywhere again regardless.

JAL had an MCC option, which was off by default, on their website. I was booking a ticket from the US, and the image is here.

There were a few currency selections available, but trying to select anything except USD brought up this message:

The payment can only be made in the currency of the departing country or in Japanese yen when making payment with your JAL Card or a credit card issued in Japan.

nv tried it, but pretty sure this isnt DCC. for example, i can choose to pay in any currency i want without DCC fees for UA flights. same goes for like some companies like uber and airbnb. in this case, JL has limited it to Yen and USD

OP said MCC, not DCC -- granted this is the DCC thread, but from time to time it does also discuss things that aren't necessarily DCC but are perhaps DCC-ajdacent.

Yes, JAL is an example of MCC, not DCC. MCC is close enough to DCC to fit under the DCC umbrella. Furthermore, since 95%+ posts on here are DCC specific, there is no sense in creating separate threads or changing this thread's name away from DCC. Uber and Airbnb are other examples of merchants that offer MCC, as Caspavio mentioned.

It's been talked about before in earlier posts, but MCC can be more insidious than DCC since the currency conversion happens before the transaction enters the payment network. Therefore, the network rules and consumer protections (to the extent acquirers abide by them) would not apply for MCC like they would for DCC.
