FAQ- What is EMV contactless?
EMV contactless is a form of contactless/NFC that uses the same security and encryption that is used when inserting a chip card into an EMV-enabled terminal. Other than not having to sign/enter a PIN for smaller transactions, the security is effectively the same as chip and PIN/chip and signature.
In contrast, MSD contactless is an older version that is designed just and only for the United States. This effectively uses much the same flow as a swiped card transaction with the same rules.
- What is CDCVM?
CDCVM stands for Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method. It's a method of telling the terminal that the customer verified their identity using their mobile device. Terminals that support it will waive the signature/PIN requirement typically in place for larger transactions, potentially saving time at checkout.
More info: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202527
- Does EMV contactless need to be supported to support CDCVM?
Typically, yes. (However, there are some exceptions below.)
- Why can't I tap my foreign-issued contactless card at most places in the US?
This is likely because the store does not support EMV contactless. Foreign issued contactless cards typically do not support MSD contactless since other markets have had EMV for quite some time. In contrast, most stores in the US have yet to get the necessary certifications/software for EMV contactless so they are typically MSD-only--if contactless is enabled at all. (See below for a list of stores where your card will likely work.)
- I paid for a purchase with Apple/Android/Samsung Pay and still had to sign for it.
Most likely, the store in question does not have EMV contactless enabled (see above question). However, there are instances where CDCVM does not work even with EMV contactless enabled. Restaurants that allow tip adjust, for example--where the tip amount is written on a paper receipt and entered by the staff later--cannot support CDCVM. It may simply be a matter of the merchant's processor or the POS software in use not supporting it too.
Another common reason is if you used a US-issued AmEx card with a mobile wallet. AmEx currently does not allow EMV contactless support in mobile wallets for these cards, so they always run as MSD contactless. Because of this, CDCVM is not supported (with very few exceptions, as noted below).
Note: if you used Samsung Pay, you may have paid with MST instead of NFC. Since MST emulates the magnetic pulses that the terminal receives when swiping a regular card, the normal magstripe rules apply.
- How can I tell whether EMV contactless was used?
An easy way to tell if you have Apple Pay is to pay with a Visa or MC while in airplane mode. Wallet will then show a transaction amount next to "Payment" for the card that was used. Alternatively, EMV-related information will typically print on the receipt (AID, etc.) if EMV contactless was used.

The former Kroger c-stores are indeed accepting EMV Contactless. I went to Quik Stop today and the terminal did shows swipe/insert and the Contactless Paypass and green dots logos comes up after the cashier presses "card tender." A signature box popped up on the screen for my $1 transaction with a physical card... I'll try a repeat in Google Pay and see what happens.
The receipt has a literal ton of information on it.
Also their gas pump is obviously not EMV or Contactless (not even the hardware) but the gas pump receipt is all different now too. It has all kinds of information. It says "Type: Completion/Force Sale" which is a phrase I've never seen on the receipt before.

So it seems that all of the Circle K's in my area (Arizona market) have been upgrading their older fleet of pumps now. They are in line with the new white ones they got that have EMV, and NFC readers, with NFC being the only thing that works. The EMV reader is unfortunately still not enabled yet. I am thinking that with the EMV reader upgrade going on all the older pumps, it is preparing Circle K now with a gas pump EMV rollout. No joke this one got upgraded this morning. On my way to work, it was the old b&w screen, and tonight, it changed, literally an overnight (overpay) changed.

You are correct its working with Google Pay Visa and yeah its EMV contactless. This makes me wonder if the local c-store/grocery store that also uses Radiant will also be getting EMV contactless when chip is finally enabled. Is EMV contactless like included when you buy the Radiant pos software I wonder?
Very good to see these former Kroger c-stores have done this. Clearly Kroger is not running the show anymore there at all and in this case that is a real positive.

I suspect it is standard on the Radiants at this point. I have been to a lot of smaller Radiant operators who had Contactless enabled the moment the MX915s arrived. Unfortunately one went out of business since then and never got EMV. The other one got EMV and has EMV Contactless enabled (Sierra Super Stop in Portola, CA and Westwood, CA). These are both running actual Radiant hardware and MX915s and work fine. But another Sierra Super Stop (has 76 fuel) ripped out its Radiants and installed those clunky Gilbarco cash registers.

Yeah its great to see that Kroger has no bearing on them anymore and this means that the only gas station brand in my city that does not accept contactless is the Kroger owned station while all the rest accept contactless payments. I think Kroger's new motto should be "Always behind on payment tech!" haha.

NYC MTA announced they will start their contactless payment trial on May 31st on some subways and buses. From the demo videos it looks to be fast and modern.
I wonder if this will provide some oomph to get more contactless cards to the masses.

On that note, it's a shame Ventra's prepaid MC functionality didn't work out better. It could have been a reasonable alternative to having a bank account and forestalled a lot of the anti cashless sentiment, especially if other cities adopted similar.

Speaking of NYC, this article makes it sound like all of the lines will get it this summer, not just the previously mentioned few.

I recently saw pictures of the new Buc-ees in Loxley, AL, and they have the same pumps as that Circle K above with the same Verifone setup. So they are probably another establishment that will do contactless at the pump at some point, although I don't think that is enabled now. I won't be near one for the foreseeable future but I know the last time I was at one about 4 years ago there was no sign of any of that.

Buc-ee's uses Flex Pay IV with NCR Radiant and the outside nfc readers do in fact work and inside is probably EMV contactless since they use NCR Radiant. I will confirm this in the next few weeks or so hopefully I live pretty far from a location so I have to drive quite awhile to get to a Buc-ee's.

So there's definitely a sweet spot for contactless on the bottom of the Clover Mini. Took a bit of waving my CSR around at an Indian takeout tonight before I found it. Using a phone is a bit more forgiving I think.
Oh, and I had to sign too. (I'm fairly sure I would have gotten CDCVM if I used my phone instead, so there's that.) It's kind of a shame that merchants are still not comfortable enough with getting rid of signatures to actually do so.
