FAQ
  1. What is EMV contactless?

EMV contactless is a form of contactless/NFC that uses the same security and encryption that is used when inserting a chip card into an EMV-enabled terminal. Other than not having to sign/enter a PIN for smaller transactions, the security is effectively the same as chip and PIN/chip and signature.

In contrast, MSD contactless is an older version that is designed just and only for the United States. This effectively uses much the same flow as a swiped card transaction with the same rules.

  2. What is CDCVM?

CDCVM stands for Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method. It's a method of telling the terminal that the customer verified their identity using their mobile device. Terminals that support it will waive the signature/PIN requirement typically in place for larger transactions, potentially saving time at checkout.

    More info: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202527

  3. Does EMV contactless need to be supported to support CDCVM?

Typically, yes. (However, there are some exceptions below.)

  4. Why can't I tap my foreign-issued contactless card at most places in the US?

This is likely because the store does not support EMV contactless. Foreign issued contactless cards typically do not support MSD contactless since other markets have had EMV for quite some time. In contrast, most stores in the US have yet to get the necessary certifications/software for EMV contactless so they are typically MSD-only--if contactless is enabled at all. (See below for a list of stores where your card will likely work.)

  5. I paid for a purchase with Apple/Android/Samsung Pay and still had to sign for it.

Most likely, the store in question does not have EMV contactless enabled (see above question). However, there are instances where CDCVM does not work even with EMV contactless enabled. Restaurants that allow tip adjust, for example--where the tip amount is written on a paper receipt and entered by the staff later--cannot support CDCVM. It may simply be a matter of the merchant's processor or the POS software in use not supporting it too.

Another common reason is if you used a US-issued AmEx card with a mobile wallet. AmEx currently does not allow EMV contactless support in mobile wallets for these cards, so they always run as MSD contactless. Because of this, CDCVM is not supported (with very few exceptions, as noted below).

Note: if you used Samsung Pay, you may have paid with MST instead of NFC. Since MST emulates the magnetic pulses that the terminal receives when swiping a regular card, the normal magstripe rules apply.

  6. How can I tell whether EMV contactless was used?

An easy way to tell if you have Apple Pay is to pay with a Visa or MC while in airplane mode. Wallet will then show a transaction amount next to "Payment" for the card that was used. Alternatively, EMV-related information will typically print on the receipt (AID, etc.) if EMV contactless was used.

Not sure about that. Then again, Chase did start offering it, so others might feel they need to copy them.

I think Capital One 360 is still contact-only.

BTW, any idea who built this hardware for T-Mobile (or did they do it all in-house)? https://www.tmonews.com/2019/03/t-mo...em-businesses/

I don't know if this answers the question:

processing provided by Total System Services Inc. (TSYS)....The GoPoint Card Reader with Display—an Ingenico Moby 8500 device—also accepts contactless payments and has a color display.

Saw these installed @ Atlantic Terminal last weekend, but no power. I'm kinda shocked this is actually happening.

And relatively on-time too? At least so far, anyway.

I'm still curious what the plan is for Long Island RR and Metro North RR(right now it's Apple Pay via the MTA eTix App).

I dug a bit deeper into the contactless on Qatar Airways and found that the Economy class seats also have a contactless reader on the back:

http://www.godsavethepoints.com/wp-c...160703-01.jpeg

However, this appears to be only on the A350-1000. I searched "new Qatar Airways seat" and found something different, which does not have any contactless on it, but that one seems to be for the A320. So, contactless support on planes really appears to be up in the air.

Also the other day I saw someone with what looked like might have been a black Citi card with contactless logo. I couldn't tell if it was one of their AA cards or regular ones. Does anyone know what cards Citi offers with contactless now?

The only Citi card that I know of that's black is the Fuel Rewards one. It'd make sense that the current one has it considering that the old Comenity one had the contactless symbol on the front. I can't find any good photos of the back to confirm though.

I'm thinking it might have been this one:

https://www.citi.com/credit-cards/cr...MSDefaultOffer

It did look a bit like that however, I don't notice any mention of contactless on the page. I wonder if they are doing a "soft" rollout where they're only getting replaced as the expire.

I forgot about the Prestige. I would have figured that someone on reddit or another website would have noticed contactless on that card by now, though, unless they literally just started issuing them a few days ago.

Shake Shack opened in Marin county today at Larkspur Landing. It was crowded at lunch, when I got there. The long line, it turned out, was in part due to the kiosk ordering system acting up, network problems I was told. Didn’t get much chance to take a closer look at the kiosk as I focused on the staff person practically ripping my Visa card out of my hand to insert into the little white Square-looking box sticking out.

The manager on the floor told me the reason I didn’t see Apply Pay in the iPhone app for ordering ahead of time was that in rolling it out the company is allowing only very few access at a time, but it doesn’t ring true as it should probably show as an option no matter what. As for the kiosk, he appreciated my suggestion to put up a sign informing people that it was temporarily necessarily for staff to guide customers, so they didn’t feel their privacy was invaded.

So a shaky shacky first day, but the place is well designed, the food is great, and the staff was generally nice and welcoming. And upon closer inspection, there was a small contactless symbol at the top of the little white box. I was told Apple Pay was accepted, but not credit card tap. Will have to come back to check it out.

In my experience contactless cards work fine at regular Square merchants. I would expect them to work at Shake Shack too.
