FAQ
  1. What is EMV contactless?

EMV contactless is a form of contactless/NFC that uses the same security and encryption that is used when inserting a chip card into an EMV-enabled terminal. Other than not having to sign/enter a PIN for smaller transactions, the security is effectively the same as chip and PIN/chip and signature.

In contrast, MSD contactless is an older version that is designed just and only for the United States. This effectively uses much the same flow as a swiped card transaction with the same rules.

  2. What is CDCVM?

CDCVM stands for Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method. It's a method of telling the terminal that the customer verified their identity using their mobile device. Terminals that support it will waive the signature/PIN requirement typically in place for larger transactions, potentially saving time at checkout.

    More info: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202527

  3. Does EMV contactless need to be supported to support CDCVM?

Typically, yes. (However, there are some exceptions below.)

  4. Why can't I tap my foreign-issued contactless card at most places in the US?

This is likely because the store does not support EMV contactless. Foreign issued contactless cards typically do not support MSD contactless since other markets have had EMV for quite some time. In contrast, most stores in the US have yet to get the necessary certifications/software for EMV contactless so they are typically MSD-only--if contactless is enabled at all. (See below for a list of stores where your card will likely work.)

  5. I paid for a purchase with Apple/Android/Samsung Pay and still had to sign for it.

Most likely, the store in question does not have EMV contactless enabled (see above question). However, there are instances where CDCVM does not work even with EMV contactless enabled. Restaurants that allow tip adjust, for example--where the tip amount is written on a paper receipt and entered by the staff later--cannot support CDCVM. It may simply be a matter of the merchant's processor or the POS software in use not supporting it too.

Another common reason is if you used a US-issued AmEx card with a mobile wallet. AmEx currently does not allow EMV contactless support in mobile wallets for these cards, so they always run as MSD contactless. Because of this, CDCVM is not supported (with very few exceptions, as noted below).

Note: if you used Samsung Pay, you may have paid with MST instead of NFC. Since MST emulates the magnetic pulses that the terminal receives when swiping a regular card, the normal magstripe rules apply.

  6. How can I tell whether EMV contactless was used?

An easy way to tell if you have Apple Pay is to pay with a Visa or MC while in airplane mode. Wallet will then show a transaction amount next to "Payment" for the card that was used. Alternatively, EMV-related information will typically print on the receipt (AID, etc.) if EMV contactless was used.

There seem to be a lot of glitches at various places. Mastercard contactless still doesn't work at 5 Guys, either tapping a card or Google Pay. This is a longstanding issue with them. Visa works fine, though.

I live near a local Mobil branded gas station that has had contactless enabled for years with ISC 250s. Always declines with my Mastercard whether its physical contactless card or Apple Pay.

I got a "chip read error" this morning at Panera while tapping my physical Chase Sapphire Reserve card. Inserting worked fine, though (and resulted in an immediate "remove card", making it possibly the fastest Quick Chip implementation I've seen). I'll have to go back to be sure it's Quick Chip now, however.

Unless it was just a freak incident that both of them, next to each other, were not using it.
the Wawa’s I’ve tried in Philly and the Sheetz stores I’ve visited in Pittsburgh all have contactless enabled

Very nice! So GetGo who is owned by Giant Eagle is doing this: https://csnews.com/getgo-enhances-cu...emv-compliance which are these: https://www.invenco.com/s/products/g...TD2RAS3KBRMU24 and https://www.invenco.com/s/products/g...w000000cFoaEAE (modular) while Giant uses Wayne readers. I doubt they would rip out the Wayne readers and add the Invenco readers.
i saw a few of those when passing GetGo stations but the one nearest my parents didn’t have the new terminals as of earlier this month.

Well I found a QuikTrip with contactless & EMV enabled at the pump but the bad news is that it forces pin on debit cards via mobile pay and its a bit sluggish to read contactless. If you try to bypass the pin it goes back to the pin prompt. Inside the Lane/7000s inside are really fast though and they live up the being quick. At the pump it doesn't at all and its odd as everyone else pretty much allow pin bypass at the pump. Maybe they need to do some optimizations at the pump.

GNC also changed their pos system and it now allows pin bypass but prompts for a zip code if you do that.. It also has animations with different sounds for different networks and different logo's after it has been approved.

I ended up trying that problematic card at McDonald's today and it looks like the card works there now (run as MC apparently since I didn't immediately get a notification from the issuing CU). I'm not sure whether McDonald's did something or the CU did, though.

EDIT: just got the email from the CU. Looks like it was run as debit after all (or we had good timing and McDonald's captured their transactions not too long after we left).

Well that is very good that is works now for you but for me it turned out that Casey's fixed contactless debit while most other places still don't work if ran as pin debit via contactless. So FNBO did not fix anything which isn't surprising they are pretty useless. Casey's uses NCR Retalix so the same system as Love's but NCR grocery stores still decline if run as debit. So I wonder if the merchant services provider actually fixed the issues and not the issuer bank. We will probably never know either way.

I checked the Starbucks inside one of the area Marriotts again this morning and noticed that the MagTek reader had the contactless light turned on until the cashier actually enabled the terminal (then it became swipe only).

Also, I think I saw an Arco with outdoor EMV and without the new "standard" setup few days ago. I'll have to figure out where that one is again and visit before it gets switched over (assuming there are any plans to do so).

I'm guessing that hotel is on the MC Contactless locator? I'm going to a Hilton Inn that is on the ctls locator tomorrow so I'll be reporting back if they have ctls or not but they had isc480s the last time we stayed. Is that the terminal that has working ctls?

Went to Costco for gas today and the pump was fully enabled for tap to pay - including membership number via the Costco Anywhere Visa card. Only gotcha for tap was that it assumed you wanted to pay with the same card. Had to cancel the transaction then insert the Costco Visa card to pick up membership number, then select the option to pay with a different card (5% back this month on Chase Freedom Visa). Was then able to tap to pay with the Chase Freedom card. Payment was processed as EMV contactless.

Does anyone have the redesigned Sam’s Club MasterCard and can they confirm if it has contactless or not? According to Synchrony CS it does have contactless now.

Found another retailer that makes the Visa animation and sound when you pay: Busch Gardens Tampa (and presumably Williamsburg as well). They use FreedomPay's software. I never use Mastercards, but has anyone ever seen this animation on a card terminal?

Yeah, I've seen it on some Ingenico terminals with FreedomPay and various Clover systems...seems to be on by default?
