Suggest card to replace Aviator.

i just had a huge fight with a very snippy woman who was handling cusomer service--I have two bank accounts on there to pay with, but have only used one the entire time...one was just there as a back up. MC withdrew money from the wrong account, and I got all kinds of overdraft fees, etc...I called up and the woman said "I see it clear as day, we took the money from the wrong account" but then said there was nothing they could do about it...she spoke to her supervisor and they said they would not reeimburse me for my overdraft fees..I explained that Ive had this card for several years, and have spent 20-40K each year, and that this wasnt about a $12 overdraft fee but showing me they valued me as a customer, she got really nasty...im now on hold to cancel the account. i dont fly as much as i used to but looking for a good card.....any suggestions????

I would not cancel in anger. Every bank, indeed every mass market company, employs people who are sometimes rude. Her answer is not their final answer. Hang up. Call back next Tuesday, and start over. Likely someone will agree to some compensation if it is strictly their error.

I really am looking for another card though. and I did speak to someone who said they were not allowed to reimburse me for overdraft fees, again, its not the $ 12 its the principle. I dont fly much anymore and this gives me an excuse to cast my net out.

mia Apr 1, 2016 10:29 am

We cannot suggest a new card without knowing a fair amount about your spending pattern (how much, in which categories), and the type of rewards that your value. Flyertalk is a travel forum; we know a lot about travel rewards, but not so much about others.

nlkm9 Apr 1, 2016 11:55 am

Ok so I spend at least 20-30 k, mostly in hotels, food, gas and trade show fees. I do have status at American but have the option to fly more so it's not that big of a deal. I do love my Hilton and use a Hilton Amex as my personal card. Thank you

Also to add insult to injury the supervisor I asked for refused to get on the line. In truly speechless that it was handled do poorly. Not the not refunding of the bank fees but the admitting it was their error but telling me they we're not allowed to do anything about it

Barclay's US is a total ********. They are far worse than typical actual British CS, and that's saying something! I strongly recommend against Barclaycard US. Don't blame Mastercard though, they're just the processing network.

nlkm9 Apr 1, 2016 1:08 pm

I dont blame mc...but they obviously have no interest in keeping my business.
who do you recommend?

isle-hawg Apr 1, 2016 4:03 pm

The Double Cash card from CITI is the same card, basically with no AF and no restriction to redeem strictly for travel.

thank you--someone was just saying today that citi card gave great customer service. Granted, i am very crabby today (I have bronchitis and I have had it for a few weeks) but Im still floored that the girl got attitude with me and told me I should call my bank to take care of the overdraft fees that were caused by their mistake.

Aviator earns AAdvantage miles. Perhaps you are thinking of Barclays Arrival?

MasterCard has no control over it. Blame Barclay's, not MasterCard! There are good MasterCards.

With a lot of your spending on hotels, food, and gas, I'd look at the upcoming Citi Costco Visa. 4% back on gas, 3% back on food and travel. It's not available yet; I'm assuming you'll be able to apply after June 20 when Costco officially switches from Amex to Visa. And the rebate is in the form of a Costco coupon that you can use for merchandise or ask for cash back at a Costco warehouse. There's no annual fee for the card, but you have to be a Costco member which is $55 a year for the regular "Gold Star" membership. No word on foreign transaction fees on this card.

If you think you want to continue to earn AAdvantage miles, then the obvious choice would be to get one of the Citi AAdvantage MasterCards. Or if you really like your Hilton points but want something for places that don't take Amex, there are the Citi Hilton Visas.

Citi Double Cash is nice since it's a straight 2% cash back card, but not so good if you travel internationally since it has a 3% foreign transaction fee.

Yes, you can. The cards American promtes are issued by Citibank. The Aviator card is a American-branded version of the US Airways Dividend Miles card, and only people who had the US Airways card have it. Barclays was allowed to rebrand the card to American, but Citi's agreement with American is an exclusive one; only Citi can offer new AAdvantage credit cards.

Well, if you want a MasterCard in the US your options are more limited but if you're otherwise happy, the Citi AA MasterCard seems an obvious choice, as noted above - it's essentially Citi's version of the same card. Citi also sucks. Not as bad as Barclay's tho.

If you want excellent customer service above all else (and great protections), Discover and American Express are fantastic choices. They aren't MasterCards though, and acceptance is more limited than MasterCard.

Almost all the good reward cards in the US are NOT MasterCard, sadly. I love my HSBC US MasterCard for service, and global compatibility (EMV contactless, no FTF). But only 1% cash back.

OOPS, thanks for catching that. I was thinking of the Arrival.

Citi has an AAdvantage card which is basically the same as the Aviator card except for those of us with the perpetual 10K miles upon the anniversary of owning it. If the OP has this version of Aviator, I recommend cooling down and holding onto the card. Otherwise can dump it and pick up another 50K miles for signup bonus and have the same benefits as the Aviator.

My first suggestion is don't keep a "backup" funding source on any bank's website. Very few people do that AFAIK, and so there's not many data points about whether such mistakes can occur at other banks too. (You can add a new funding source quickly if you need to for a special situation, your can just "push" a bill pay from your checking account to the credit card if you need to, etc. No point in setting yourself up for this kind of problem by permanently setting up a "backup" funding source which you don't actually want to use.)

And my other suggestion is don't confuse "customer service" in general with your particular unusual situation. Even banks that have better "customer service" in general may sometimes not do well at it.

So if you follow my first suggestion above and set up your account so a mistake of this type is not possible, I would recommend you look at Citi AA Plat, since it's also an AA card, which Aviator is, and also has 0% forex, like Aviator has.

Read the Wikipost at the top of this thread in the Citi forum where you will find links to offers which are better than those currently on the AA or Citi websites:

Its the thingy at the top of every page of that thread. Click the link that reads "Click here to Display Full Wiki" It contains live links to the best offers and lots of FAQ :)

mia Apr 3, 2016 10:50 am

To see the Wikiposts you must use Flyertalk's full desktop view. If you are using the mobile view the Wikiposts are invisible, but even on a mobile device (phone, tablet) you can use the desktop view by scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking [View Full Site].

nlkm9 Apr 3, 2016 4:40 pm

thanks to all. Im going to get myself some more AA miles:)

Ok so when I go to the online link it says only 30 K miles, not 50K--should I call? im not terribly experienced with this, I have only a few credit cards:)

You can still apply for and receive the 50,000 mile offer. That is the purpose of the links in the Wikipost. If you have questions, please post them in that thread rather than here.

This is what the person was talking about. You MUST use a desktop computer for it to be above or at the top of the page.

The WIKI is a link at the top of the page that is usually 1-3 pages at most. But according to mia it only shows on a desktop computer (this is all I use), on portable devices there's a "view full site" on the bottom that needs to be activated? It gives you a lot of information and really is a must for learning. Good luck

I maybe that someone... Again - the wiki is at the top of every page in the thread - you do not have to search!!! The Wiki for this thread is a wealth of knowledge and has links for 50K vice 30K miles. I suspect you are using your phone to access FT. FT sucks for a phone IMHO Use a computer if you have one, you will see it. OR follow the instructions of MIA and others as to how to view it on your phone.

Don't mean to take things off topic, but lots of people in various threads ask questions that are asked and answered in detail in the Wiki's. Is this an IT isolated incident or perhaps more widespread due to browsers and other issues I am wondering? Like the OP who was sincerely looking, but did not see the Wiki, I can't help but wonder if that is not why so many others in different threads ask the same questions over that are clearly answered in the Wikis.

My son used to do IT and now he manages the Dept. that's why I new some companies block links so you can't see them.
