I’m seriously considering this card now that they are adding TV, Internet, Streaming as a 5% back. If I use the card for the utilities category as well as this new one, I will get more back on these categories than I would using my travel cards. The way I see it: even though I prefer earning miles and points to getting cash back, I should switch this spend to the US Card and then take the savings and apply it to my travel expenses. For example, with utilities I earn 1.5 miles per dollar on my UA card where every miles are worth about 2 cents. So I yield 3% savings. With Hilton Amex I earn 3 points at half a cent each which yields me 1.5% savings. So on $100 spend I get $5 back with the US card versus $3 with UA and $1.50 with Hilton. If I then use the cash back on travel, it’s serving my purpose. |
Can someone kindly list all categories available for 5% on this card? I am contemplating applying for one, but want to know what the categories are before doing so. TIA.

Thanks for the link. I didn't realize it's published. I looked at the US bank site, but couldn't find the specific categories. I am guessing once you choose categories for the quarter, they can't be changed until the next quarter. Plus, do many people have a banking relationship before applying?

I guess my situation is a sort of misnomer as one water utility charges a flat rate whether its a CC charge or a deposit from bank which baffles me, but the 5% makes up the difference in that case. One of the electric bills of my mine also charges a 2.5% fee when paying with a credit card, but it still nets me 2.5% cash back after the fee so I still see it as a win.
I think I would average around 3% back when credit card fees are included in the equation, but I'm still ahead in my book considering I have to pay these bills regardless. The cash back I earn just goes to investments anyways so in a roundabout way it's an excuse to save a few more dollar a month. I'm somewhat lucky in that most of the utilities I pay do accept a CC payment, albeit with a fee for some. That kind of payment can be a huge part of someone's budget, so the 5% back even with fees can earn someone decent returns on something they'd have to pay anyways (at least in my mind). I'm all for the Dave Ramsey approach in most situations, but he's never come around to the benefits of credit cards if used appropriately. |

Is your utility company using SpeedPay for using a credit card? If so, are they count on 5% for Home Utilities?

Can I product change to this? P2 has AR, and want to PC when the annual fee comes due. I am going to get the AR in a few months and keep it for the 3x mobile payment category.

Looks like they've changed the design. Here's hoping for a flat card with no raised numbers (personal preference as it works better with my small wallet).

I don't think any of the utilities I pay for with the Cash+ have speedpay, yet they all code as "utilities" for the 5% back.
My municipal water bill unfortunately can only be paid by check or direct debit of a checking account. If you read their website, offering direct debit is oh-so modern and helpful. Of course, you can't set direct debit up online, you need to come into the office in person with a canceled check. As I said, so modern and helpful. |

I added a wiki to the thread so that we can log which merchants do and do not qualify in the 5% categories. Hopefully this will be helpful for the community.
