Datapoints:
There is a $90 AF and one cannot earn the 90K in one year unless one does $25K spending.
Best way to add to initial purchase bonus of 20K is to add AUs (and quite a few of them, too!).

You have to pay the annual fee, if you spend 25K you also get a 50% off award companion pass.

I will probably cancel before the annual fee. Since its so churnable.

If you are going to use this for flights on virgin, I would suggest a one way award to london and fly back using a different airline from continental europe to save money on taxes.

The bonus posts on the same statement with the annual fee for the following 12 months. However, in my experience the statement sometimes credits only 7,500 miles even though we have spent enough to earn 15,000 miles, and it takes a full billing cycle or longer to correct this type of error. Many front line Bank of America CSR's seem not to understand that this is a standard feature of the card, and even those who do are not empowered to award the missing miles, they must ask Virgin Atlantic to investigate.

What are the best options for the return with low taxes? Aer lingus with Avios? Any way to use AA miles?

There are two aspects:

1. If you depart from an airport outside the UK, you will avoid the UK Air Passenger Duty. This is a real tax imposed by the British government, and all airlines collect it. Your return trip from Europe can connect through the UK, but the flights must originate elsewhere.

2. Separately, some airlines collect fuel surcharges on award tickets, others do not. You can use AA miles on flights operated by AA or by AB, but you will pay a fuel surcharge if you use AA miles on a flight operated by BA.

There is much more that one might need to know about this issue, but that should get you started.

Yes, I just received an email offer for this again. What was the point of them shutting this down for a couple of weeks? Anyway offer says expires 10/15 but if BOA VA was smart they'd keep this open through the holidays!

I am tempted to churn as the offer came back, but not sure its worth it. Transfer to HH has become less valuable. How are people using VS miles? I had to transfer to HH the 1st time as award fees/surcharges were too high.

I was thinking first on Hawaiian. If that doesn't work out I can add them to my HHonors balance or attempt to use them on Delta.

My plan is either VS Upper Class, SFO-LHR (100K VS miles RT) or VX F, SFO-BOS (75K VS miles RT), depending on availability.

A person can buy prepaid debit cards for $500 a pop and convert them into money orders or bill pay at very low cost with no float. Another no cost at all alternative is to open a checking and two savings accounts at $5,000 each with GTE Federal Credit Union and use those funds to pay off the credit card. BOA is one of the credit cards that treats that opening of a bank account as a purchase instead of a cash advance. This place also has 6 month CDs that at least pay 0.1 percent interest and those can also be opened with a credit card.
Can you open an out-of-state acct at GTE?
