This thread is a continuation of the discussion posted here from 12.08.2012 - 5.13.2014: Barclays Arrival/Arrival Cards (1.05%/2.1% travel credits)

Current offer for Arrival Plus is 70K pts w/$5K spend & AF waived 1st year.

Barclays says that you earn “miles” but you’re actually earning cash back with the card since you can’t transfer your Barclays miles to airlines. But you can redeem them for statement credits at 0.5 cents per mile (poor value) or 1.05 cent per mile if you redeem for travel.

You get 5% of your miles back if you redeem for travel, so 40,000 miles gets you $400 towards travel and 2,000 miles back (5% of your miles back). You must have at least 10K 'miles' in your acct if you wish to redeem as a travel credit. 2500 'miles' can be redeemed for a stmt credit though.

If you want, you can redeem miles to cover a portion of a travel charge instead of the full amount. For example, if you have 80k miles and a $740 airline charge, you can choose to redeem just 70k to cover $700 of the charge.

You earn 2X miles on all purchases, so you’re effectively getting 2% cash back for each purchase. But since you get 5% of your miles back when you redeem for travel, this is effectively a 2.1% cash back card when miles are redeemed for travel.

This makes the Barclaycard Arrival PlusTM World Elite MasterCard® (with 2.1% cash back for travel) better than the Capital One Venture card which offers only 2 miles per $1 or 2% cash back, only if you spend $30k+ per year after first year, because Arrival Plus AF is $30 more than Venture.

If you receive a call from 302-255-8000 after applying for this or any other Barclay's card, it is a legit number! You can also call them back directly at 866-951-1437.

Man, I must be psychic. I cancelled my Arrival just in time. Hopefully I can get them to consider this a completely new app.

This is concerning "Payment Money Holds" showing up as "PYMTMONYHOLD".

I stupidly ACH'd $60 more than my bank had, so my Arrival got an insufficient funds flag. Barclays went ahead and tried 4 days later (surprising) and I had funds available so it pulled those correctly.

However, now I'm getting a PYMTMONYHOLD on all my payments. So I can make a payment, but it won't reflect upon my available credit until 7-10 business days. Very annoying. The reps I spoke with are obviously clueless about this claiming multiple silly reasons why this may happen, "It's always been like this", "Multiple payments = payment hold", etc. etc.

How long does it take for this payment money hold habit to die off?

I have the no fee Barclays Arrival card. It seems like it gets new categories and expanded redemption date and a new card design and they improved some existing card benefits. Doesn't look like EMV is being given out on the free version of the card at this time from what the article says.

The Barclays fee card is quite competitive now and even the non fee card is getting better as well.

From the announcment:
Current Barclaycard Arrival World MasterCard cardmembers ($89 annual fee) will receive the new Barclaycard Arrival Plus card, with chip technology, when their current card expires. They can also request the newly enhanced card right now. Barclaycard Arrival World MasterCard cardmembers ($0 fee) can continue enjoying their card, with enhanced redemption options. They can receive their new card – with the new design – at the time of renewal or upon request.

I just was approved for this card two days ago... do you think if I called and asked they would send me a new kind of card? I really would prefer the new one as opposed to the old one for the chip.

They did under the old rules/categories so I'm not sure why they wouldn't under the new ones.

Hmm do you think "RECREATION SERVICES--NOT ELSEWHERE CLASSIFIED" could be argued to fall under "Tourist Attractions"? It's a 3rd party ticket agency for theme park and attraction tickets.

MBTA in BOS does in fact code for redemption, but you need to either load $25+ on charlie or get a weekly/monthly that is over $25 (I think weekly is $18)

The refundable priceline.com hotel reservation was never charged on my arrival card even though I used it book the room. Therefore I couldn't redeem my miles for statement credit. Lol

I agree. I like the free version much better now and it is my favorite card for rewards program even with a few headaches which got rectified.

I do wish the free one had EMV as well but I gather they are using it as a premium product for now.

New benefits, new categories and increased length of time do make this a much better competitor than it initially was.

There is still other competition such as Chase Sapphire which has some other advantages so you need to compare.

Same for me. I canceled my Hawaiian Airlines CC back in December. Then I was charged an annual fee in Feb. I called to close it again and it was closed, but they didn't remove the AF. Then in March the card was reopened to remove the AF. I had to call to close card for a THIRD time in March. The card now shows up in my Barclays login as a closed card. Oh, and BOA stupidly did a hard pull when I closed the card in December, and I'm still fighting with them to remove the hard inquiry. Bunch of idiots.
