Barclays Arrival Plus, now 70K w/$5k spend

This thread is a continuation of the discussion posted here from 12.08.2012 - 5.13.2014: Barclays Arrival/Arrival Cards (1.05%/2.1% travel credits)

Current offer for Arrival Plus is 70K pts w/$5K spend & AF waived 1st year.

Barclays says that you earn “miles” but you’re actually earning cash back with the card since you can’t transfer your Barclays miles to airlines. But you can redeem them for statement credits at 0.5 cents per mile (poor value) or 1.05 cent per mile if you redeem for travel.

You get 5% of your miles back if you redeem for travel, so 40,000 miles gets you $400 towards travel and 2,000 miles back (5% of your miles back). You must have at least 10K 'miles' in your acct if you wish to redeem as a travel credit. 2500 'miles' can be redeemed for a stmt credit though.

If you want, you can redeem miles to cover a portion of a travel charge instead of the full amount. For example, if you have 80k miles and a $740 airline charge, you can choose to redeem just 70k to cover $700 of the charge.

You earn 2X miles on all purchases, so you’re effectively getting 2% cash back for each purchase. But since you get 5% of your miles back when you redeem for travel, this is effectively a 2.1% cash back card when miles are redeemed for travel.

This makes the Barclaycard Arrival PlusTM World Elite MasterCard® (with 2.1% cash back for travel) better than the Capital One Venture card which offers only 2 miles per $1 or 2% cash back, only if you spend $30k+ per year after first year, because Arrival Plus AF is $30 more than Venture.

If you receive a call from 302-255-8000 after applying for this or any other Barclay's card, it is a legit number! You can also call them back directly at 866-951-1437.

The DoC post has lots of denials due to cards opened in the past 24 months too. Must be a shift in policy at Barclays unfortunately.

Specific question on rounding redemption(s)

RE: Barclay Arrival

Was wondering on the basis of experience if someone could answer regarding how to get the best bang for the buck on redemptions when the points on account are insufficient for total giveback.

I want to buy an airline ticket for my DD for Oct. travel, since she won't make it home for the holidays. I am planning on a FC ticket for about $377 on AA. I definitely won't spend enough on the Arrival even in 90 days to reach enough to hit the total.

What should I plan on for points strategy? Does Barclay do partial redemptions over $100 by rounding to the twenty-fives?

To be more specific, the coach fare is $255.00, so in my mind if I get, say, $250 back, that would be acceptable. But is it realistic to think that on a $377 ticket, I could expect Barclay to offer such a variable option? What would be an approximate expectation, if anybody knows?

Thanks for reading.

My 1st and 2nd statement closed on the 17th of each month (a Mon & a Thur). I assume my 3rd will be on the 17th (though perhaps on the 18th, since the 17th is a Sun). Yesterday morning, the 15th, I made a large purchase that put me over the $3k spending requirement for the sign-up bonus.

Does the charge have to post before my third statement closes to satisfy the sign up bonus requirement? Or does the fact that the transaction date is before the date of the third statement satisfy the sign up bonus requirement?

The charge only has to move from pending to posted for one to achieve bonus points if the minimum spend is met.

It is one of the better benefits over other cards that one doesn't have to wait for a statement to cycle to obtain the points.

Yes, several people have been declined recently. A manager said 6/24 would cause a denial, but other people have said they've been denied at only 2/24.

my guess is 2/24 had other problems besides new cards, if it's 2/24 may as well be once in a lifetime , 6/24 we can make work as my wife will be 0/24 in November.

Another DP: declined for Arrival+. Just closed my last one less than a month ago (which had been open for a year). Credit analyst cited too many accounts open in the last 12 months (interesting he didn't say 24 months). However, I was approved for the Aviator 60K and needed to restock my AA miles so all good.

Yeah, 2/24 would probably exclude the majority of regular folks too, not just us.

Did you ever have the aviator ? Interested in DP's with the new 24 month language

Hopefully we'll get some more concrete info on what the rule actually is, I had an Arrival planned as my last card in 2017 before I go card free for 2 years so this changes things.

MY wife will be 0/24 in November, Southwest Companion pass first, probably a CSP third then an Arrival as # 4 then Marriott.

BTW, there are 2 BOA travel rewards cards, each gives $250 for spending a $1000. Not sure on churnabilty as they have NAF and I plan on keeping them both ( one is a business) ope long term to keep the relationship alive

Didn't you just reference the DoC article? That article followed by a long list of DPs.
There is NO 24 month language (it was just a blind guess). The existing DPs are all over the place. There's no simplistic formula for the A+ denials.

Nope never had the aviator. Funny thing is I was approved for a Plat Select a week ago. If 0/24, why not go for another UR earning card over the Marriott. So many Chase cards I'd rather have over the Marriott. Marriott might be one of the worst co-branded airline/hotel Chase cards out there.

Platinum Select is from Citibank, Aviator is Barclay. I just started getting AA mailers so I have a few of those cards and more planned.

The First 2 cards she will get wil be Southwest for CP, we get great value out of Marriott points as we transfer to travel packages and have Courtyards that we use that are 20K or ~$200 night. Hoping to see a 100k offer when we are ready

I thought there was a new rule where you could only have one Sapphire card

For us the worst we see is United, we have 170k that is basically useless, need to get another UA to redeem for gift cards

Edit: had a total brainfart and confused the plat select with the us airways mc
