Stupid Question on Cash Back Cards

So far, I've limited myself to travel cc's. Ones that accrue miles and/or points.

I've yet to delve into the cash back realm, but to be honest, I have no idea how they work.

Yes, I used the search function, but I'm thinking this question is too newbie to warrant a long running thread.

So, how do cash back cards work?

Do they: Give you a credit at the end of the year towards your balance? What if you don't have a balance--do they send you a check? Or is it basically a credit against future spending?

Basically, how does a cash back card payout? And why are they so popular on a forum for travelers?

They are all different...

Some allow statement credits in any amount
Some allow statement credits in fixed amounts
Some will mail you a check

They are popular because it's free money when you manufacture spend or it can offset fees for GC purchased with other credit cards

It's also free money when you normal spend.

Questions are rarely too newbie for search.

Some automatically issue statement credits

One card doesn't fit all needs. The cards that offer the best rewards rates for grocery and gas spend for me are cash back cards.

Stupid Question on Cash Back Cards

The way this is going I may move to MS using cashback cards. United is killing us today!

Ok, so the answer to my question is: it depends? Each card is different, both in categories, bonuses, and how you actually receive the 'cash back'?

Most issue the cash back in the form of a statement credit.

Some will actually cut you a check.

I don't think it's accurate to state that most issue statement credit, it really does depend on the card.
