Discover Targeted Offer

I just received a targeted offer in the mail from Discover...

Spend $1500 per month from Aug-Dec, receive $250 cashback. Not a bad deal if you pair it with the 5% quarterly categories

Q3: $1500*.05 = $75
Q4: $1500*.05 = $75
All other purchases: $1500 per month x 5 months= $7,500- $3,000 (Q3 & Q4 spending)= $4,500 *.01= $45

$75+$75+$45+$250= $445 (minus any fees for GC spending) for $7500 spend (must be $1500 each month)

I got one that sounds the same as yours late last year.
You are right to zero in on the cat bonuses too to maximize the offer.

I met my spend in the last month and if I recall the bonus CB posted instantly.
I took a direct deposit option for payment. I didn't see any other value in the gift cards or other items.

Do you need to do anything to be targeted for these offers and is it for any Discover card? I have the DiscoverIt card.

it's only about 3.2% back and the only 5% is gas for now and it's capped at 75.00. Not a good deal. You can get 6% with Amex Preferred at groceries and 5% from Us Bank cash + and other cards. also 5% for cable and cell from Chase Bus cards

You just don't put things on the card where you can get a higher cashback somewhere else. I would just buy VR. The $1500 in gas would take up an entire month's spend. If you can do the same thing for Q4 5% bonus, it is defintely worth it.

I don't know where you get 3.2% from?

Even without the 5% bonus amounts it is $250 +$75 on $7500 spend which would be 4.3%. With the 5% categories it would be $445/$7500 or 5.93% on the entire spend.

You have a card you can do better than that on?

Besides the Amex Preferred and US Bank cash+ are limited.

I received an offer, but not quite as good.

Need to spend $3K per month for Six months to get $500. So that would get me $680/$18000 or 3.7%. With promo categories it would get me $800 or 4.44% both of which are pretty much better than what I can get anywhere else.

My problem is I have a minus $140 reward balance on that card due to their taking away some portal cashback for when I made purchases not using their card. So I would get only $540 or $660 at best which would be 3 to 3.7%.

The online shopping 5% cashback is easy to utilize. The gas category is never good for me. I typically get closer to 20% off gas by using BP gift cards and coupons. The 1Q bonus would be really tough. No way I spend $1500 on Restaurants and Movies. Also, I have two other Discover cards to get the quarterly bonuses on anyway.

Still this would get me 3% in cash. It may be worth while to sign up for and leave the option open as I think through it.

May I ask for details on how you do this?

I received a similar offer.... spend 1000$ per month from sep-jan get 150$

I never used my discover until this last month to get 5% back at gas stations. They're probably targeting people who don't heavily use the card.

Balima's offer

$18,000 is a pretty big spend requirement. Are you considering taking the offer?

Yup. Why not? With MS I net $780 in travel reimbursements. Sounds like a deal to me.
