Starting the Game- looking for suggestions on a card

First off let me just say that I've been reading around for a while and trying to pick up on different things. I've finally come to the point where I would love to start participating.

I am looking for a suggestion for a $1000 spend that will benefit me the most in the long term (best points per dollar travelling) but still save me money on my August trip just by spending on my normal monthly bills and purchases. I am going to be visiting Portland in August and I would love to know if I could save more money by applying for a hotel card or an airline card as well. I don't have a huge preference in companies. This card will be one that I keep for future travel spending and I may consider others for churning at a later time in my life. I have a Chase Freedom card and I am eligible to upgrade my Citi card to Forward in June if I so desire.

Thank you in advance for any who attempt to help!

Get a sapphire and call it a day

I applied for sapphire preferred card to which they said they would get back to me. However when i access my chase account there is a new credit card with a 5,000 dollar limit that has a number and a payment due date. does this mean that the system accidentally just told me i have been accepted?

also i heard there is a 2,000 spend promotion. do you think they would change mine if i called?

You likely were approved. You can always call to confirm. Google chase reconsideration phone number

You've been approved, although that's $3K spend, not 2K, unless there's been some new development of which I'm not aware.

If you still want another card within $1K spend, you could start with Amex Hilton 50K bonus, or if you could use Hawaiian and don't mind AF, then BoA Hawaiian with 35K (or transfer to 70K Hilton).
