Best New Card for Big Initial Spend

Good afternoon,

Within the next two months I have to make a big spend -- about $30,000. The kick is that there is a convenience fee of 2.5% ($720) to make the spend on a credit card.

I'm wondering if anyone has ideas about whether there are particular cards -- for example, cards with very generous signup bonuses or yearly bonuses for big spends -- that might make it worthwhile to pay the $720 fee.

I'm already Hilton Gold, and I know this could help me get Diamond, but I'm not sure 90,000 HH points + Diamond is worth $720.

Thanks, in advance, for any thoughts or advice.

Can they take a Money Order and eliminate the convenience fee?

Welcome to Flyertalk.

I have transferred your thread to the Credit Card Programs forum, this is the best place to solicit credit card advice.

What type of expenditure? Taxes, tuition, medical?

You could immediately get the 100,000 Chase British Airways Avios ($20K) spend with that.

And the companion pass for the $30k spend.

With the high fuel surcharges, it is only worth using the companion for BA Biz/F tickets. (2 for 1 BA F much better in my opinion than biz). Not worth it for coach.

Best New Card for Big Initial Spend

The first is does the payment have to be in one lump? Next question is does the OP have the credit resources to get a CC company to go along with a 30K charge - especially with a new card.

If you pay via check or ACH transfer do you eliminate the convenience fee? It's hard to justify a 2.5% fee even to clear a big bonus, since there are much more cost-effective ways to go about running up a spend number like this.
