Called today to see if any retention offer available for my Mile & More card. Transferred to a specialist who waived the annual fee ($95) for this year. I did not have any charges on this card last year.

Aviator Silver : charged AF on 1/31, have had card since US Airways roll over. No waiving of AF. No offers to downgrade/product change. Only option was given 10k miles (no spend requirements). Said that Reds stay Red and Silvers stay Silver as they are updating their card member benefits are not allowing any changes right now. I asked if there was a manager and he said he was one. Im happy with the 10k miles, but will call back in a few weeks to see if theres another opportunity to move to Red.

Isn't it the last "update" that's fueling this thread? This makes me wonder whether Citi is competing harder to push Barclays out (or at least further restrict them to down-market offerings) and whether one or more Citi products could have have an EQD benefit coming.

Canceled my 2 year old AA Red card just now. I got a retention offer last year, but nothing was offered this time. Probably about $500 in spend on it over the last year, so not surprised

What may be "fueling this thread" has nothing to do with what may be causing a "lull" in retention offers at Barclay's end. Barclay has announced more upcoming changes to benefits (no details) and one agent told me March 1 (either announcement date or effectiveness date, I'm not sure which) and also told me that explains why there are currently no offers for me. Citi already upped some of the spending benefits of their AA cards, so Barclay may be planning something to better compete, who knows. But all is speculation until it's announced.

I don't make it a habit of calling in every year to threaten to cancel. I assume many others don't either, and that therefore the last benefit "update" is driving a lot of the cancellation activity noted in this thread. I do agree that further changes are all speculation until announced, though.

That was the same offer I received, but I cancelled.

Called 2/11 to close Aviator Red due to annual fee posting a week earlier at first year anniversary. Got transferred to specialist and given the talk about card benefits but offered no retention and did not ask for one. ~$2700 spend on card.

Called today re my Red Aviator card, very minimal spend, open since card switch from US Air(?). Annual fee hit on Jan 31. Was given no offers and told I could not transfer to a retention specialist because there were no offers. Was told I have 30 days from AF posting (so March 2) to cancel or downgrade if I want the AF refunded - earlier posts here mentioned 60 days, does anyone know the definitive answer? I said I'd think about it and call back to cancel or downgrade. (Was told the only downgrade possible was the no-fee Aviator)

If I refer my wife to Red Aviator and then downgrade myself, can I get the referral bonus or is it too late (since she won't complete spending before I downgrade)?

Aviator Red Card
I called before the statement cut concerning the $89 fee and got no offers after they transferred me to retentions. After the statement cut, I called a second time, and after a full account review and discussion of the benefits, I received a full fee waiver. Realistically, there was zero chance I would close the card. I have over $30k outstanding on a 1% fee 0% interest balance transfer valid until June along with the grandfathered 10k bonus that more than covers the fee. Either way, I am glad to have $89!

Aviator Red Card

$3-4K spend. First time in five or so years with card could not get the AF waived (two calls). But, did get a $100 credit after 3x $1,000 spend monthly.

Given that it is a 10,000 miles annually USAirways legacy card, this seemed like a no-brainer: $100 + 10,000 RDMs > $89 + $30 in opportunity cost on spend + aggravation of having to keep track of spend for three months.

I just called.
Got an experienced retention agent.

- 60 day grace period from billing date of annual fee for full refund of annual fee if cancelled.
- After some talking he found an offer: Spend $1K in 90 days get 5K miles bonus offer.(I accepted)
- No annual fee waver this year however. So the "price" of the 5K miles bonus is essentially "$89"

He was so nice that I decided not to cancel the card on that call but I will call back and officially cancel it later - the offer is simply not good enough even with annual 10K miles rebate.

PS. They keep pretty good records of all the offers and retention offers ever given for the life of the account - he was reading it off from the screen.

Decided to ask about the no-fee version hoping that would prompt an offer. I was told that I had the best product available right now. Restated my question for a second time. The rep told me to visit the website and view all the cards available there. I finally just flat out asked to be downgraded to the no-fee version and was told that was not possible.

I'll wait and call back in a couple days, maybe I got a bad apple in the customer service department but it doesn't look like Barclay has any interest in retaining customers.
Called back today since annual fee hits tonight. Asked to be downgraded to the no-fee Arrival. Zero problems this time.

No credit hit or annual fee charged and I was able to keep my current miles.
