Help: Best points for Australia trip

Hi,

I'm in early stages of planning a trip to Sydney from San Francisco (about 5-6 months out). I am about to apply for new credit cards and wanted to know which would be the best to focus on. Currently I have 73k AA miles and 70k Chase UR points.

My question is, which is better for flight to SYD assuming I could do business class either one or both ways? I would then make my next round of applications focus on that airline.

Thanks!

You may want to look into using the Two-Browser trick to get the Citi AAdvantage cards: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/miles...ey-appear.html. You can use these miles to book an award on Qantas/Hawaiian. Redemption option don't look very good online right now, but that could change (for better or worse!) as your trip nears.

You could also sign up for the Mileage Explorer card to get a hefty bonus of United miles, which you can transfer your UR points to: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/miles...nt-credit.html. Redemption options on United look better than AA, especially if you're OK routing through ICN on Asiana.

You should be able to check current award availability for your dates of travel on both aa.com and united.com. Although award-seat availability can change by the minute, seeing what is available now for next Spring might help you decide which miles to pursue.

Also, keep in mind that both AA and UA miles can be redeemed for one-way travel, even on their partner carriers; so you might end up using AA miles in one direction, and UA miles in the other, depending on award-seat availability.
