First credit card
Hi guys
I need to get my first ever credit card and I want to collect miles on it. My monthly expenses might be around $1000 a month. It should be MC or Visa because I need to use it in Europe sometimes. Also my preferred airline is Delta. I saw that Delta offers a credit card but it is American Express. Can you recommend something to me please? Thanks, Mite |
Have you ever had any kind of credit like a car loan? It limits what cards you can get if you have a blank credit report. Some cards are easier to get than others.

I have never had any loan. Just a debit card. I always paid with cash before.

Well, you could try, of course, but you might have a trouble getting approved for a reward credit card. They are considered "elite products" (justifiably or not is another story). Check your credit score with Credit Karma or/and Credit Sesame first. See if it's close or over 700. If not, start with just a regular credit card with no annual fee.
If you still want to try, I'd recommend Chase Sapphire. The 40,000 points bonus can be transferred to many programs; it fits your spending pattern; and I think Chase might be more liberal toward new members than Citi and Amex. Be ready for the initial denial and having to call back and making your case. Check Chase reconsideration thread in this forum. If that doesn't work, just get some regular credit cards from all major banks and in about a year you'll have "conditioned" them to the point when you're able to apply for most of the cards you want. Those bonuses are not going away, at least not that quickly. Finally, you might already know that, but (especially with reward cards), do not carry a balance ever! Make sure to pay off all your balances every month unfailingly and on time, or you'll find yourself in a world of trouble. Another words, do not treat your credit card as a personal loan dispenser and you will be fine. Good luck! |

I think it is difficult for u to get a card without any credit history. I suggest u to get a citi card or bank of america card first. For instance, it is easier for u to get a bank of america card in their local branches. They will ask u to deposit some money to that card and it will be the quickest way for u to accumulate your credit history if u can not have the associate card of other people's.

I recommend a no annual fee for your first credit card. This is a card you want to keep for a long time.
How old are you? Chase Freedom would be my recommendation for now. Save up on the UR points, then apply for the Sapphire Preferred in the future and use it to transfer your saved UR points to - then you can convert them to airline miles. As you build credit history you can apply for better credit cards. Even still the Chase Freedom is a great card to have. |
If you want to start with a lil app-o-rama, i suggest
Chase Freedom Citi Forward Amex Hilton (50k Bonus on 750 spend in 3months) |
My son just got the Delta 35k Skymiles American Express card. It was his first credit card, and he has absolutely no credit history. I know that it is Amex, not VISA, but you have to start somewhere, and 35k skypesos will get you a round trip flight ATL-YUL in coach.

for your first card it would probably be easiest if you went to a local credit union or smaller bank. They tend to not have as strict for credit. My first card had a $500 limit. Capital one might also be able to get you a card with again a lowish limit, but won't have a forex fee.
