Are you not able to use the 100 travel credit? If you can, then card becomes free and no need to downgrade. Redeeming points towards travel charges is easy. I think it's a min of 2500 points.

Not really. I usually don't have to pay for checked bags or buy foods onboard. I can't really use AA GCs so I find it difficult to break even on the AF. Do things like parking (airport or other), road tolls, etc. count as "travel" for point redemption in your experience? What about plane tickets or hotels booked through third parties (ie: Orbitz or even traditional travel agencies)? TIA.

Parking, hotels, toll Bridges and third party sites for booking are considered travel for redemption.
