Cancel card lose points?

I know this has been asked probably 100 times, and I myself should know by now, but the old brain doesnt hang on to info like it used to....
If I cancel my chase saphire, do I lose the points in the account? Same question for my amex card points if I cancel them. I have them all nearing 1 year since opened and need to cancel before annual fee kicks in. Im guessing I need to transfer my points before cancel card.
Thanks.

If you are worried downgrade to a no fee credit card if possible. I usually wait 10 months to cancel and have not lost any points/miles.

I already have way more cards than I want, and churn way more than I should.

I am in same situation, would expect to lose the remaining 7K UR,
but did just get approved for a Ink Bold Business,
and apparently one can merge Sapphire UR into that with a phone call.

Yes, you would lose the points. You can transfer them out to one of their partners, or to another Ultimate Rewards account owned by you or another person. I think the same goes for the Amex points but I don't for sure.

Use them or transfer them because you'll lose 'em.

Thanks all. I will go ahead and transfer them first.

After checking out transfer partners, I realized that amex doesnt really have any partners now that im thrilled about using miles with. Most of our flights are from cincinnati to bangkok, sometimes to puerto vallarta. I may have to go with delta, but should wait til they have a transfer bonus offer. Might have to find amex card with no fee if there is such a thing?

There is an Amex (MRish) card with no fee, but there are limitations:

It's Amex Blue, and it allows you to hold on to your Amex Membership Rewards Points.

But while you are only an Amex Blue cardholder (not a cardholder of an Amex MR card with an annual fee), your points stay there, but you ca no longer transfer them to airline or hotel partners. So if you use Amex Blue to "park them", then you'll have to get another annual-fee "full" Membership Rewards AMEX later when you do want to transfer.

(Amex Blue is in Membership Rewards Express, which is a "crippled" form of Membership Rewards with all of the transfer-out-to-partners options removed. But your points are subject the "best" Membership Rewards program on any of your cards, which is why if you later get a "full" Membership Rewards AMEX you'll be able to transfer those points that were "held" by the Blue card.)

Have you cosidered, though, transferring to a hotel program rather than an airline?
