Yes, the Mark III. I'm kind of horrified that I'm actually doing it.

But, hey! 23,000+ MR points (if they include the tax).

They do include the tax, don't they? It's a $4700+ ding on my credit card, and I assume that would be the number used to calculate the MR points. Or would it be just the pre-tax $4300 that I paid Canon?

That's awesome! I thought about grabbing a Mark II for under $1700 since I incorrectly assumed that prices for it would plummet after the release of the III. Never happened.
Anyways, I don't see why the MR total wouldn't include the tax.

UPDATE: I went back to Canon, cancelled my order. Then I went to the MR online shopping portal, where the Canon store is offering 4X miles, as Taliesin suggested. I bought the camera there, paid with my AmEx Platinum, got extended warranty and over 20,000 MR points - THANKS, all!

Great! Hope it works out for you! I think you might be over-estimating the generosity of the MR mall, though. Unlike say, airline malls, 4x really means 4x -- that is, you get 1x on the purchase and a 3x bonus. Still,
17200 MR points is not too shabby, and buying an expensive gadget like that with Amex Plat should make you sleep a little easier.

I'll be a little more excited once I get over the shock of committing to the purchase...

taliesin, you slipped in.

Maybe not 5X, but still better than the 2X + 1X I would've gotten with the AAdvantage purchase!

Besides, I'm in the early stages of my mileage obsession: learning another way to accumulate miles/points is exhilarating...

In relation to your original question about maximizing miles for buying the camera, you should look into the possibility of double-dipping in the shopping malls. I used this technique when Sears were offering 10x on AA last September. I bought a Sears gift card and earned 10x on that and then used the gift card to buy a $3000 camera and got the 10x on that so 60k miles for a $3k purchase.

Which malls allow double dipping using a gift card, or a competitor's card for checking out like this? I know Discover requires checking out with their card, and even Chase UR says check out with a Chase card.

My recollection is that the tax is NOT included in the bonus. That's because the merchant has to pay Amex for the points. Naturally the merchant does not want to pay for the portion of the sale (ie the tax) that they don't get to keep!
