Recommendations for rewards card mix
I'm looking to fill out my mix of rewards cards now that I'm 120+ days out from my last card app. Currently my primary cards are:
Chase Sapphire Preferred (w/50k offer earned) - dining & travel, all other spend Penfed Plat Cash Rewards - gas only BofA BankAmericard (was the Schwab FIA non-Signature) - groceries only I have 2 MCs (lousy rewards cards) as backup, no Amex/Discover cards though. I'm looking to put the BofA in the drawer and apply for the Amex Blue Cash Everyday -- extra 1% and I hate carrying a BofA-branded card. My annual spend is probably $10-15k (yes, it's low, but my remaining expenses can't be charged) and half of that is probably dining/gas/groceries, the rest is a variety of retail, some of which I can purchase through UR and get the bonus points. I do very little travel for business (probably 2-3 domestic flights/nights on US/SPG this year) and with a potential job change in 2013 I can't predict how much travel (if any) I'll be doing in the future. The only consistent personal travel is a trip to Japan (only on UA/ANA) every 6-18 months (not enough for status in most cases) though I have other domestic and international (Europe and Asia/Pacific) destinations on my to-visit list, maybe 1 or 2 a year if I'm lucky. (When I start traveling more, that'll help my annual spend.) Due to the Japan travel I prefer UA for airline program, my hotel preference for SPG is really only due to work and I don't travel enough to even qualify for Gold. I do have HH Gold from a Visa promo but I've yet to stay in a Hilton property -- ever. So far I'm looking at one or a combination of cards in addition to the Blue Cash: MP Explorer (and downgrade CSP to CS when AF is due ~Nov) SPG Amex Fidelity Amex 2% Chase Freedom MP Explorer - my preferred carrier is UA, but I don't fly that often domestic or international. If I go this route I don't think I can justify 2x AFs (CSP and MP) so I'd end up transferring my UR points to MP then downgrading the CSP. Only 30k signup bonus, no way I'm hitting the annual spend bonus. I know I also lose the 7% dividend and customer service going this route, but I think the 2x AF outweighs that. SPG Amex - not a lot of obvious benefits but everyone seems to value Starpoints so highly. Would be a stretch to meet the spend for the 25k signup bonus. Fidelity Amex 2% - I actually use my Schwab brokerage/bank accts so it sucked when they dropped the 2% FIA Visa...not really looking to open yet another brokerage account esp. when it's points and not instant statement credit. Chase Freedom - probably going to get this either way, but since the 10k bonus has a minimum spend, that could get in the way of the SPG Amex. I'm open to other suggestions, especially the Citi cards which I'm not familiar with. One note -- I'm not looking to churn card apps right now. |
I'm a relative newbie so take this for what it's worth, but I recently signed up for the AMEX HHonors (not the Surpass, I wanted no annual and low spend at the moment) and didn't realize the 6 points per $ for common daily spends like grocery, gas, cell and cable bills that came with it. Mixed with your preexisting gold status, which I have as well, it may be worth having. Churn that with the Citi HH card and it's a decent base. I personally plan on using Hilton for some weekend trips to some big cities we've never visited, so it makes sense for me.
