Question about AA Visa and Amex

Hello All,

I am new to this forum and have a simple question.

I just recently applied for a the AA Visa card for the 50K bonus and was approved. I have already spent the required money to get the award miles and have received them. If I apply for the AA Amex, can I do the same thing for the bonus miles or will it not let me because I already have an AA account with the AA Visa?

Thank you for your help!

You'll be declined due to you are not first time holder any more.

Citi has been known to issue duplicate cards/bonuses though, right? You just have to wait long enough (18 months). Correct me if I'm wrong because this will be an issue for me shortly (coming up on 18 months with only the Citi AA Visa...Can I apply for the Amex, or the Visa+Amex+MC for 140k?)

IMHO you will almost certainly get the Amex card as the offer only requires you be a first time holder of the particular card you are applying for. However, Citi may apply (probably will apply) its "secret" rule that you must wait 60-90 days between apps to get approved. Best bet is to wait at least 95 days from date previous card was issued.

There are many lengthy threads about the AA Citi cards. Many, including myself, have gotten all three of the AA cards, some several times over the course of years.

I know I didn't get those 1.5 mil miles through my AA account by flying BIS.

You'll likely be declined for first time only. The way to get both personal cards is to apply for them both on the same day. Otherwise you usually have to wait about 18 months. That is not everyone's experience but that is how it has worked for most.

You would have a better chance of aproval applying for either the AA Visa Business or AA MC Business.

That's not the question! It's easy to get both cards and both bonuses if you apply for both "at the same time". It's not possible, in our experience, to get both if you wait until the first bonus posts (but only that long) before aplpying for the second one.

You can either apply for both on the same day, or wait 18 to 20 months between apps. There's nothing in between. Those are the only choices (for the person Citi AA cards).

The reason "both at the same time" works is because it tricks the system into each card app not seeing the other card app. But if you wait, the second card app does see the first card app and says "invalid" because of that.

My question is if you plan on closing an account; do you keep the AMEX or VISA?

In my case I'll keep the Visa because it works. (The Amex has problems getting the double miles on AA purchases to work. I hope to eventualy get it resolved for the purchases I've arleady made, but it gives me no incentive to pick that card for AA purchases in the future.)

Please note that I'm talking about cards from the recent away7.citicards.com signup promo which include double miles on AA purchases for the first year. If you have a card from an earlier promo, this may not be a factor.

There may be other benefits to the Visa. Obviously one is closer to 100% acceptance. Another is that per some thread in this forum, the Visa may have always-primary rental collision coverage. (But I don't use this as a factor for myself because I've long had a Diners Club card with always-primary coverage.)
