Paying credit bill with debit card?

Sorry if this has been answered previously...couldn't seem to bring up anything with a forum search...

Got a miles card (credit)...can I pay that with my other miles card (debit) that's tied to my checking account??? Anyone tried it or know for sure? I'm too lazy to call Chase or AMEX to find out. :D

Hi jtb,

Amex's pay by phone and pay by computer system only accepts payments via a checking or savings account. You may want to check with your bank. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

No. You can't pay credit cards with other credit cards or debit cards.

I've read in the past that people have done balance a transfer from a credit card to a debit card, which then turns into cash in your checking account, but have never tried it myself.

skofarrell is not precisely correct. It is true that one cannot pay a credit card bill directly with another credit card or debit card. However, there are many credit cards linked to bill paying, one can pay a credit card bill via bill pay and have it debit to a credit card account. In the debit card bill payment case you would not use the debit card itself but would debit the checking account directly. A debit card acts as an electronic check, not as a credit card, so in online bill payments there really is not point to use it.

He's trying to get points from using his debit card to pay a credit card bill. Can't be done. On that point, I'm not precisely correct, I'm completely correct.

Now again, in theory you can use a debit card to fund a new checking account and then write a check from the new checking account to pay your credit card bill. But again, some institutions limit the initial deposit on a card, you run the risk of making a mess out of your CHEX Systems report, and you'll eventually run out of new banks that take a debit card for funding.

I personally find this statement a bit odd that the OP admits he is TOO LAZY to call the banks to find out.

At the same time the fellow FTers are trying to provide information...

skofarrell, you are too generous in helping. ;)

:D Haha...FTers are a hoot...yes I was too lazy that day (and don't have a problem admitting it ), and I suspected that "double dipping" on miles in this scenario was not doable...but the knowledge and experience of FTers is legendary and so I posed the question knowing that someone nicer (besides Kim from AMEX who posted above) than the banks customer service reps would answer...I've got more important things to do than wait on hold with CSR's. Thanks for the answer skofarrell!! And what helpful or pertinent information did you provide to the conversation Happy? That's right...zilch! :D
