It's highly unlikely that someone will test positive on PCR more than a few weeks (3 or 4 weeks) after the initial case. Yes it can happen, but a lot of these stories (old wives tales some of them) relate to a time when testing sensitivity was set sky high and we have all learned from that period that it was counter-productive. By all means have a go at it before departing but personally if the Lateral Flows are coming back negative then you should be OK. As for your friends, they may want to check with another provider, to see if another test device will give a negative result. If you fish around the UK Arrivals thread you will see example certificates there and can find different equipment being used. Randox I know has been correctly calibrated.
