Plus, driving our own car makes it easier to take a cooler and a few kitchen supplies so we're not dependent on visiting restaurants even for take-away food.
happy vacation!!!!
chicago is 1872 miles from sfo per UAL. I really just can’t.

I’m fine at home. We have space. Phew.

How are you feeling about flying ? I have been reading mixed comments on my FB Vegas group...sounds like the weekends are pretty fun and close to normal but not the week days so much. I can't take the August heat. Where are you staying ? I remember that you weren't too happy with Flamingo last time but I think lots more hotels have opened .

I've flown at least once every month since March, and it's sort of ok, but as things ramp back up there are things that are potential problems.

At the start it wasn't a problem because *nobody* was flying. 10 or 20 people on a 737, and other people were seeing fewer. You could get from the curb to the gate with your only sort-of contact with anything being that TSA touched your ID, but you could sanitize it right after. It was like that for a while.

Lately, the TSA lines at LAX have been potentially problematic. I've only been on Alaska, but in T6 they mix the ID line for pre and not-pre, and the distancing can get pretty close. I did my last trip out of ONT, which wasn't a problem at all, and signed up for CLEAR for my next trip out of LAX so I don't have to stand in line close to people.

Proximity to people on the plane depends on the airline - AS has been pretty good. I think UA and AA aren't doing any distancing anymore. I think WN might still be, but you should check if you fly them.

WN has middle seats open until October (I think) and on my last flight, they encouraged everyone (34 passengers) to spread out around the plane.

I'm not too worried about flying this time but I have the in-laws with us, so they always add a bit of excitement. MIL is a great traveler and we've done dozens of trips with just her over the years, FIL is the opposite.

We're renting a house just off the strip this time with my wfie's family. (mil/fil/bil/bil/sil/sil/us)

SOs sister is very worried, they refuse to fly and are planning on making the drive from cheyenne wy......she's stuck in that spot where she doesn't want to go but doesn't want to miss out. I think its 50/50 they bail....and if they do come I don't think they'll leave the house.

Incorrect mask usage is definitely about ignorance or laziness and not defiance. I'm in Idaho right now, mask usage in the towns I am in is almost 100% indoors and in close social situations at outdoor businesses (eg, when ordering food), but correct mask usage is probably 50%. I think a lot of people are ignorant, lazy, or both. To be fair, there hasn't been much effort by public health officials to correctly educate people about how to wear them or even why.

In other areas, there is plenty of straight out defiance. But that's a bad omni topic.

A further advantage of CLEAR is that no one touches your ID, but I would use the eyeball scan rather than the fingerprint reader.

I've also been using paper boarding passes so I can throw them away, and my phone doesn't touch a scanner or hand that 180 other phones have touched in the last hour.

I've always printed my boarding pass to avoid juggling phone with carry on etc. in airports.

I am assuming that the house doesn't come with a casino. Deal breaker.

DIY or would someone in the house need a casino license?

just so OP isn’t responsible for the other adults during the vacation. It’s enough to take care of ourselves and being responsible for Masks and distancing for ourselves. I won’t worry about how the other adults feel or act.

I am uncertain as to whether I can convince the unsure, but this virus is almost never transmitted by surfaces or touch unless you have a transmitter sneeze into your hand and you shove your fingers into your nose and eyes

We spread this with aerosols and droplets, which is why we could get this sucker under control with appropriate masking, social distancing when possible and avoiding crowded indoor poorly ventilated areas.

If you are concerned about fomite transmission for other illness such as flu, then keep your mask on, which will keep your fingers out of your mouth and nose and try not to rub your eyes. Wearing glasses can give you tactile cues when you are touching your face.

Better yet, have a small bottle of sanitizer and use it often.

I drove about 3400 miles a few weeks ago. It was an out/back from near Austin to northern Utah. The driving was spread over 6 days, and I threw in a bunch of scenic detours to make it more interesting. I swim, so I tried to arrange a lake to swim in along the route most days (I failed two days). But it would have been much more difficult with someone else in the vehicle. Yea it would have broken up the boredom, but I'd have probably stopped a bit more, and might have missed some things I wanted to see (like stopping at Hoosier Pass in the Rockies).

I'm supposed to fly next week and am already preparing myself for the worst. I'll have an interesting supply of masks (some paper, some fabric, some wild designs) and a face shield. I'll probably just wear the shield during high-traffic times, such as entering the airport, security, and boarding. I'm flying on AA, and bought F since it was only about $100 more than coach. I'm preparing myself that the F cabin will be full (either upgrades or employees). I'll have wipes with me to disinfect the seat, and since I'll have window seats I'll also wipe down the area around the window and wall.

We'll see how it goes. I'm not looking forward to flying, but it is much faster than driving. If it goes well, I might do other flights this year. But more than likely, I'll be doing a road trip out to West Texas (the Marfa/Ft Davis/Toyahvale area) during the first week of November, to hopefully get off of the grid during the election madness (not much WiFi near Big Bend or hiking the Guadalupe Mountains). I had hoped to be somewhere in China, but that won't be happening (I was in Beijing right after the 2016 election and it was wonderful).
