UA PlusPoints for Copa upgrades

Hey guys next month I’ll be flying Copa for the first time, I just wanted to know how Copa prioritizes the use of UA plus points for upgrades on them?

pmarrsouth Feb 20, 2023 9:38 am

Z space needs to be available to upgrade into when you try it. No WL

After upgrading a Copa flight with United Pluspoints, I don't have access to the reservation anymore on Copa.com.
I get the following message: "It seems like your reservation needs to be reviewed by a service agent. Please contact our Call Center for assistance."
I called Copa and all their agents can say is that the reservation has not been synced yet and that I need to wait, I have been waiting for almost 10 days and nothing, I am worried this won't get fixed before my flight. How will I make check-in or choose my seats?
Any solution?

Call them. Ask to be transferred to the redemption department. Hopefully one of the ladies there can sort it for you on that call

How can one go about checking for Z inventory? ExpertFlyer does not show a "Z" fare class.

I just upgraded as well on a Copa-issued ticket, as see the same message. Ugh. Will try calling Copa to fix it.

Edit: Quick fix by Copa. Cant believe was able to use pluspoints to upgrade basic economy :)

Generally if there is R available, there is also Z

But you will need to call them and ask if you want 100% confirmation

I've done this many times, both on 230 and 016 tickets. If Z is available the upgrade confirms immediately. If no Z space, it says no upgrade. There is no waitlisting.

Every time I have done this I get the 'call reservation' message. Every time they have been able to sync it within a minute or two, it's never been a problem.

If the agent can't do it, hang up and call again.

Only time we ever had an issue was a complex ticket... a 3 leg 016 UA/CM ticket, with 2 UA legs and 1 CM leg. I used PlusPoints to upgrade the UA legs, and UA miles to upgrade the CM leg. When I called to resync Copa said they could do nothing and United had to do it. United said Copa had to do it. I got United and Copa agents on a three way call and they couldn't figure it out. Got to the last leg (CM leg) and there was no seat assignment, and biz was full. Options were economy or don't fly. Flew. UA refunded the miles.

With four passengers, does Copa split the DNR like United does if three or fewer were to get the upgrade?

Just spoke with a Copa agent who answered my question (which may be obvious to many of you FT veterans…): yes, they’ll split the PNR.

any airline needs to split. It is impossible to have these together - it is an ancient limitation of how airline ticketing works.

We got our upgrade… quite simple, actually.
  • First we made the request using the process on United’s website. After submitting, a confirmation message appeared, though I wasn’t entirely confident that Copa had approved yet.
  • Next, I navigated back to my reservation on Copa’s website and entered my PNR and last name to bring up the reservation. Unlike previously, a message was displayed indicating that the reservation required review by a Copa and that I should reach out to their call center.
  • After a couple of selections (I called the US office), I was routed to an agent who requested the reservation number and my name, as well as the origin and destinations on the ticket.
  • She asked and put me on hold for a few minutes. When she returned, she confirmed the upgrade and waited while I verified by entering the PNR and my last name again in the browser.
  • Bingo… :)
Very good customer experience, in my estimation. And I can be a stickler.

R is clearly listed on your screenshot for the Copa flights. They do not publish Z availability. If you want to confirm if Z is available, you need to call Copa and ask if upgrade space / Z is available for X flights on Y dates

you are right -- i am going blind in my old age!

Had the same experience yesterday. Easy process overall. Had to wait about 10 minutes with Copa but that's fractions less than dealing with UA!!!!

Considering purchasing a one-way UA ticket (IAD-MCO-PTY). Both the UA and CM segments have PZ and Z availability, respectively. Will it be a single 40 PlusPoints to upgrade the whole itinerary or is it 60 PlusPoints (20 for UA and 40 for CM)?
